PEP revealed strong growth in cellular handset sales in 6-months

Wolmaransstad - Pepkor Holdings has published its interim results for the six months ended 31 March 2025, revealing strong growth in cellular handset sales during the period.

The number of cellular handsets sold increased by 17% to R6.8 million, and the group’s market share in the space continued to rise.

Citing data from Gfk, it noted that the Pepkor Group is responsible for 80% of prepaid handsets sold in South Africa.

This is up from 7.5 out of every 10 handsets sold as of 30 September 2024.

“Smartphone penetration increased, as the group makes smartphones more affordable, accounting for 65% of handsets sold,” it stated.

“Combined with the group’s expansive store network as a powerful distribution channel, Pepkor has cemented its position as the clear leader in the cellular market.”

The group’s active SIM card base increased to 30 million, driven by the number of SIM cards sold. SIM card sales underpin the group’s ongoing revenue.

“Total customers using SIM cards sold by the group increased by 5% to 30 million — a powerful growth driver in ongoing revenue,” it said.

The company launched FoneYam, a cellular handset rental product, in 2024 and has seen continued strong growth.

“FoneYam, the newly developed cellular handset rental product designed to make smartphones affordable for customers, was rolled out to 1,000 stores by the end of March 2024,” it said in its half-year 2024 results.

“Active customers breached 1.5 million by the end of the period. Monthly activations averaged 165,000 over the period,” Pepkor noted in its half-year 2025 results.

Pepkor said FoneYam’s rental book amounted to R258 million in the same period in 2024, with an initial provision level of 16%.

The FoneYam product had accumulated 202,000 sales by the end of March 2024.

It added that Pep Cellular sold four million cellphones during the six months ended 31 March 2024, 50% of which were smartphones, while Ackermans sold 1.3 million devices, 80% of which were cellphones.

“The group sells seven out of 10 prepaid smartphones in South Africa, and 5.6 million cellular handsets were sold during the period, 58% of which were smartphones,” Pepkor said at the time.

It noted that handsets from brands like Stylo and Premio contributed 18% to the product mix in the six months ended 31 March 2024 and achieved higher gross profit margins.
