Farm owner fined following arrest of 23 suspected undocumented foreign nationals

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the North West commends members involved in an intelligence-driven operation conducted in the Vorstershoop policing area, which resulted in the arrest of 23 suspected undocumented foreign nationals. The operation also led to a farm owner being issued with an admission of guilt fine for allegedly employing undocumented foreign nationals. During the operation police intercepted a white Isuzu truck and a white Toyota Land Cruiser single cab on the R379 gravel road. Several occupants fled into nearby farms, while the driver and the farmer, were stopped. It is alleged that the farmer stated that the employees are legally in South Africa for study purposes. Police requested the farmer to contact the individuals, who returned voluntarily for verification. Further checks, conducted with the Department of Home Affairs in Ganyesa, confirmed that their documentation had expired or invalid. The suspects are between the ages of 21 and 49,...

Over 900 people arrested as government declared June 30 operation a success

The majority of 30 June’s anti-illegal immigration marches remained peaceful, even after protesters stretched police resources into the night. National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (Natjoints) chair Lieutenant-General Tebello Mosikili said this as she gave a briefing on the outcomes of the day of national protest. Mosikili stated that 120 marches had taken place across the country, with only 12 requiring law enforcement intervention at some stage. These interventions and parallel police operations yielded hundreds of arrests of both South Africans and illegal immigrants. “More than 900 persons were arrested during yesterday’s operations. The majority of those arrested were illegal foreigners and for looting. “Some were arrested for public violence, some for harbouring illegal immigrants and business robbery at spaza shops,” Mosikili stated. The Western and Eastern Cape recorded the most arrests, with 215 and 208, respectively. These arrests were predo...

Several people have been arrested for looting and attempted looting during ongoing demonstrations against undocumented immigrants across the country. The Police Ministry says that while most of the marches have remained peaceful, police officers have responded to isolated incidents of criminality. The Police Ministry says officers will act decisively against anyone who uses the demonstrations to commit crime. Police Ministry’s spokesperson Kamogelo Mogotsi says, “Members deployed across the country have been instructed to act swiftly and decisively against anyone who engages in criminal activities, including looting, attempted looting, public violence, malicious damage to property, intimidation, or any other unlawful conduct”. She says the acting Minister of police, Firoz Cachalia, has urged citizens to exerci...

Alleged police informer says earlier Madlanga submission made ‘out of fear’

Alleged police informer Tumelo Nku said his earlier submission before the Madlanga Commission was made out of fear. He said after further consultation with a spiritual healer, he decided to submit a supplementary statement as he tries to clear his name in the R300 million cocaine bust in 2021, which he was involved in. Nku also revealed that he was introduced to an alleged trafficker involved in the drug bust by late African National Congress (ANC) member of Parliament (MP) Kebby Maphatsoe. He returned to the witness stand on Monday to continue his evidence, which was abandoned on Friday to consider new information. Evidence leaders had grilled Nku regarding his role in the July 2021 interception of R300 million worth of cocaine in Johannesburg. He told the commission that his supplementary statement was due to fear. “There had been reservations in what I’ve inserted in my previous statement, and it was mainly out of fear.” He also told the commission that he was pu...

Speaker opts not to oppose Ramaphosa’s urgent court bid

National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza won't oppose President Cyril Ramaphosa's bid to interdict the Impeachment Committee. She's filed a notice to abide in the matter. The President approached the court to interdict the work of the Impeachment Committee pending a review of the Section 89 Independent Panel’s report. Ramaphosa argued that the panel exceeded its mandate and relied on hearsay rather than fact. Didiza's position means Parliament will not contest the application as the battle now moves to the courts. Top South African clothing retailer taking on Capitec in the telecoms market

Mr Price has steadily been building a telecoms giant, with the apparel retailer now selling devices and running a successful mobile virtual network operator (MVNO). Mr Price’s growth in this segment comes as the MVNO market in South Africa is booming, with Capitec’s successful Connect business leading the pack, and device sales are becoming an attractive segment. The retailer’s success in this arena comes after over a decade of building out its telecoms offering. In its 2014 financial year, Mr Price was already experiencing strong growth in airtime sales, prompting the group to start reporting these sales separately. That year, the group’s airtime sales surged by 41.7%, making it one of Mr Price’s fastest-growing segments, with total airtime and related mobile revenue reaching R120 million. In June 2015, Mr Price launched its MVNO, mrpMobile, which offered post-paid contracts, smartphones, and tablets to creditworthy store card customers. Initially, Mr Price had a 55%...

World Cup 2026: Heartbreak for Bafana Bafana as stoppage-time Canada winner ends historic run

Bafana Bafana’s FIFA World Cup fairytale run came to a crushing end after they were beaten by co-hosts Canada in the Round of 32 at the Los Angeles Stadium on Sunday night. Bafana lost their grip on the match deep in stoppage time when Canada’s midfield anchorman, Stephen Eustáquio, blasted a loose ball inside the box past Bafana goalkeeper and captain Ronwen Williams. The strike sent Canada through to a historic, record-extending Last 16. South Africa had already etched their names into the history books just by reaching the knockout stage of the competition. However, they will still feel deeply hard done by the defeat, missing out on a golden opportunity to make even more history under coach Hugo Broos. The Belgian tactician remained slumped in his dugout chair after the final whistle. The goal likely marked his final game in charge of Bafana, capping off an impressive five-year spell during which he guided the team through 60 matches. Both sides were navigating uncharted...
