Ethiopian national arrested for murdering Obakeng Santo in Mahikeng

Mahikeng residents have marched to the local Department of Home Affairs and the municipality to demand stricter immigration law enforcement. The protest was sparked by the arrest of a 29-year-old Ethiopian national in connection with the deadly incident. A fatal stabbing claimed the life of a 26-year-old North West man. The victim, identified as Obakeng Santo, was discovered by his brother, who saw him suffering from a severe stab wound. Santo was rushed to a nearby health facility but was tragically declared dead upon arrival. Madibeng Municipal Manager has survived assassination attempt

The Municipal Manager of Madibeng Local Municipality, Quiet Kgatla, was shot multiple times in an apparent assassination attempt on Wednesday afternoon. The incident reportedly occurred on the R511 near Silkaatsnek, Hartbeespoort, while Kgatla was driving home. Gunmen allegedly opened fire on his vehicle before fleeing the scene. According to Roland Craucamp, who was among the first people at the scene, Kgatla managed to exit his vehicle and reach a nearby roadside shop despite his injuries. Clean-Up Operation has uncovered a widespread non-compliance in Matlosana

The City of Matlosana has conducted a multi-disciplinary Clean-Up Operation in Hartebeesfontein and Tigane as part of its ongoing efforts to enforce municipal by-laws, promote public safety, and ensure compliance with applicable legislation. The operation was led by the Safety and Security Department, with support from the Fire and Rescue Services, Local Economic Development, Licensing, Public Safety, the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality's Environmental Health Section, the Matlosana Municipality's Electrical and Finance Department, as well as the South African Police Service (SAPS). Officials conducted inspections at businesses throughout the area to assess compliance with municipal by-laws and other regulatory requirements. Treasury defends decision to withhold R13.5bn from municipalities

National Treasury has defended its decision to withhold R13.5 billion, of which the City of Johannesburg owes R3.6 billion in equitable share transfers from municipalities. National Treasury froze July 2026 equitable share transfers to 60 municipalities across South Africa, citing persistent financial mismanagement and staggering levels of unauthorised, irregular, fruitless and wasteful expenditure (UIFWE). The suspension affects municipalities across all nine provinces, including major metros such as Johannesburg, Mangaung and Nelson Mandela Bay, as well as smaller towns like Buffalo City, Beaufort West and Port St Johns. Councils were given written notice and the opportunity to respond before the decision was taken. Transfers will resume only once municipalities demonstrate compliance and provide proof of corrective action. Botshabelo residents says illegal foreign nationals still operating in their area

Residents of Botshabelo in Bloemfontein say they have lost all trust in government officials as shops owned by undocumented foreign nationals continue to operate. Residents in Bloemfotein held a meeting in which a response from the Department of Home Affairs was discussed. Residents say they are ready to close down spaza shops and hair salons owned by undocumented foreign nationals.
