Parliament has met with NW municipalities over poor governance

A joint parliamentary oversight delegation has descended upon the North West province to address the challenges plaguing seven underperforming local municipalities and one district municipality.

The delegation, comprising the Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, the Standing Committee on Public Accounts, and the Standing Committee on the Auditor-General, will work with the North West Provincial Legislature to continue engagements with the municipalities.

According to the Office of the Auditor-General's municipal audit outcomes for the 2023/24 financial year, the municipalities in the North West are struggling with significant challenges, including debt, unfunded budgets, and irregular expenditure.

The municipalities set to face scrutiny include Mahikeng, Tswaing, Ratlou, Ramotshere Moiloa, Ditsobotla, Mamusa, Lekwa-Teemane Local Municipalities and Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality.

The oversight visit aims to enforce accountability and consequence management, with municipalities expected to explain the misuse or loss of billions of rand allocated for essential services like water and electricity.

"We want to send a clear message that municipalities cannot continue to disregard the law and neglect communities without consequence," said Dr. Zweli Mkhize, Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on COGTA, who will lead the parliamentary delegation.

The provincial government has also briefed the delegation on measures taken to support and stabilise municipalities.
