Police are investigating cases of murder after two people terribly lost their lives on Thursday, 14 August clashes between taxi, cab drivers and allged community patrollers
The first murder case reported involved a community member who was seriously assaulted and stabbed on Thursday during tensions
He died at the Tswelelang Clinic 2 upon arrival. Some Community members along with taxi and cab drivers took to the streets on Thursday morning to fight criminal groups which have been terrorising community members in town and township of Tswelelang
The second murder case reported was of a man who was doused with petrol and set alight on Thursday
• Some residents in Tswelelang slammed graphic content circulation
Residents in Tswelelang have slammed some individuals for circulating graphic content (pictures and videos) of a man in 20s who was set alight during Thursday, 14 August 2025 violence in the area, saying there are residents who are sensitive to such images
The images and videos were shared through social media (Facebook and WhatsApp) hours later the incident occurred
This came after the Wolmaransstad taxi, cab drivers along with alleged
community patrollers took to the streets on Thursday, 14 August to seek criminal groups which have been terrorising community members in town and township of Tswelelang
Various incidents of clashes between the involved stakeholders took place in the morning of the day and the afternoon including the assault and stabbing of the taxi driver in Tswelelang who was taken to the Tswelelang Clinic 2 were he died
Meanwhile, a man in seemly in his 20s who was said was a member of a community terrorising criminal group in the area was allegedly doused with petrol and set alight on Thursday
Graphic images and videos of him burning were circulated on social media, some residents in the harshly spoke against the continued sharing of such visual content arguing that kind of content leads to trauma for sensitive residents
• Municipalities face financial constraints as Equitable Share is still withheld
Various municipalities including Maquassi Hills still face financial constraints as the Equitable Share Funding is still withheld by the National Treasury
To ensure financial accountability, National Treasury withheld the funding of six municipalities in the North West province. The affected municipalities include Maquassi Hills, Tswaing, Kgetleng Rivier, Naledi, Ditsobotla, and Mamusa Local Municipalities
Maquassi Hills and other municipalities have been impacted with the funding withheld
According to the directive from National Treasury, these municipalities are required to provide proof of payment or payment arrangements with third-party service providers before their equitable share can be released. This move is aimed at ensuring that municipalities prioritize their financial obligations, particularly with regards to paying salaries
• The Fighting Unemployment Movement says job creation is not prioritised
The Fighting Unemployment Movement which advocates youth employment says Maquassi Hills has a draft budget which has a total operating revenue close to R700 Million while job creation is not put first
Kagiso Sejamoholo Phutiage, the Acting Chairperson of the movement says, the total expenditure is close to R800 Million for the 2025/26 financial year, with major revenue items of water and sanitation at R110 Million combined
"We still have more residents who need water for survival while they get none, with this amount of money invested in water and sanitation services can be provided and jobs can be created. We belive when the municipality can collaborate hand-in-hand with proper initiatives of youth for job creation , the fines of R5.5 Million can be collected with intense analysis of property rates and other revenues included" - Fighting Unemployment Movement Acting Chairperson, Kagiso Sejamoholo Phutiage
