Batho Pele Movement in Kgakala has signed a petition over unhealthy conditions

Leeudoringstad, Kgakala - The community-based movement in Leeudoringstad, Batho Pele has signed a petition with the Kgakala residents in Leeudoringstad over illegal dumping in the area

The movement said, they are investing in having the dumping site located at the entrance of their township removed. The movement also pointed out that, the illegal dumping is creating unhealthy living conditions for the residents

The movement said, the landfill site is very hazardous to the health of the community members living beside the site

"From this week going forward. We are investing our efforts and energy on the removal of the dumping site that is located at the entrance of our location. We've realized that the dumping site is very much hazardous to the health of our people, particularly those living in ext 4,5,6,7,8 and 9" - Batho Pele Movement

The movement also said, the regular burning of waste materials such as chemical and dead animals makes it difficult for people to enjoy their right to a clean and healthy environment. The movement highlighted that the elderly people are dying and infants are getting sick

The movement signed a petition that will be sent to the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality to highlight the unhealthy living conditions they argue they are subjected to before they begin to take further steps

"We will be submitting a letter accompanied by a petition to the district municipality to address this matter, before we take it to the streets. We demand immediate and permanent closure of this harmful site" - Batho Pele Movement

It has been over 10 years since the community requested that this dumping site be converted into a recreational park

Various community members who are affected by the current living situation have supported the initiative by signing the petition to have the landfill removed from the community

"We call on every member of the community to support this initiative for the betterment of our society. This might be how we begin the year but surely not how we will end it" - Batho Pele Movement

The community said, they had enough of their unhealthy living conditions which have been there for years. Some community members feel their area is forgotten and it's not enough for the Maquassi Hills Municipality to clean illegal dumping sites on weekends. They say, they want a permanent solution

" I see Maquassi Hills Municipality officials are making themselves busy in Kgakala, now they are cleaning illegal dumping sites on weekends but that's not enough, we want tangible changes, I mean real developments in Kgakala Location, the forgotten township in North West. Kgakala has not had proper roads particularly in extension 4,6,7,8 & 9.A community hall, which the North West provincial government has promised to build before 2016 local government elections, has been an unfulfilled promise" - Concerned community member

Residents says, the Maquassi Hills Municipality owes their forgotten township, Kgakala,  some developments and they should be done now because  they did not forget promises made to them
