Leeudoringstad, Kgakala - The ANC Youth League members made a visit to the Kgakala-based secondary school, Tirgalo after recording a 61% of 2025 matric passes
The ANCYL members conducted a Back-to-School oversight due to the decline of matric results
Various issues were outlined during the oversight which included overcrowding and shortage of classrooms
The ANCYL members saw various issues which challenged the progress of learners during the 2025 academic year
"We conducted a back to school oversight on the 14th of January 2026 to this particular school, after their massive decline of matric pass rate. Upon our arrival we had to check the state of readiness and the state of infrastructure, concerns raised were by the deputy principal on her cry for immediate intervention"
Tiragalo is the only secondary school that serves the community of kgakala, absorbing grade 8s from 3 primary schools. The school is overcrowded and carries about 1005 learners. The school is in short of classrooms and the North West Department of Education has only provided two mobile classes in the past 5 years
The following issues were outlined during the oversight visit:
• Science laboratories both physical sciences and life sciences are now converted into normal classrooms that carries about 70 learners each class
• Science learners are unable to do proper practicals because labs no longer exists and this has affected their learning system based on the stream of subjects
• The capacity of a mobile class is 1:30 which is not assisting at the moment because the number of learners is too high.
• The school that carries 1005 learners, has only 8 functional toilets for both males and females. Security or fencing of the school is in poor condition and leaves the school exposed to criminal activities
• There's a huge outcry for another secondary school that will at least relieve pressure and load from Tiragalo Secondary School
Last year, community members of Kgakala called on the North West Department of Education to assist in building a second secondary school citing overcrowding that cripples teaching and learning
The school and the community pleads for immediate intervention from the Department of Education in the North West Province
Residents said in the area said, the Department of Education failed them
Tiragalo Secondary is the current public school which serves the entire neighborhood of Kgakala, however, some of learners within the area, have decided to be enrolled in nearby schools in Rulaganyang and Tswelang respectively, each and every academic year due to overcrowding and lack of spaces at Tiragalo
"We need more than 2 secondary schools in Leeudoringstad. I see no reason why MHESS was built at Wolmaransstad whereas we have one secondary school which caters for three primary schools in this area at this point"
Residents said, the municipality and the Department of Education in North West failed the citizens of Leeudoringstad
In 2023, The Public Works and Infrastructure Department that was led by Deputy Minister, Bernice Swarts promised to skatch down designs for a new senior public school to eliminate overcrowding at Tiragalo Secondary School, however, that plan is still in the pipelines
Residents blamed the Department of Education in the province for allowing more public senior schools to be built in Tswelelang while Kgakala has only one senior school which is subjected to a high number learner-enrollment due to overcrowding
