SA government has placed R600 million for June 30 protests to curb lawlessness

The South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Justice, Crime Prevention, and Security (JCPS) Cluster is monitoring social media and considered using drones to monitor threats on 30 June 2026.

Anti-immigrant group March and March planned to bring the country to a standstill in a national shutdown protest calling for the immediate and mass deportation of illegal immigrants living in South Africa.

Protesting groups have positioned themselves as being against illegal immigration only, emphasising that the protests aren’t about xenophobia.

They have blamed illegal immigrants for several social problems, including the high levels of crime and unemployment in South Africa.

March and March also submitted a series of demands to the authorities, which included stricter border controls and the mass deportation of undocumented foreign nationals.

Speaking to the media on Monday, 22 June 2026, SAPS and the JCPS Cluster said plans included deploying more police in the week leading up to the date to deter potential violence.

Acting police minister Firoz Cachalia said that monitoring social media posts would be a crucial part of assessing potential threats.
