The City of Johannesburg has cleared the E5.25-billion Eskom debt, bringing an end to a dispute that threatened its electricity supply but the focus now shifts to whether the city can maintain financial discipline.
The settlement removes the immediate threat of Eskom taking action over the debt.
But for the city, the bigger test now is whether it can keep up with its electricity payments and avoid finding itself in the same position again.
City Mayor Dada Morero said that this is a significant milestone in the city's journey towards financial sustainability.
"Going forward, we remain committed to paying our current accounts on time, reducing losses from theft and vandalism, and investing infrastructure that will secure a reliable energy future for the city of Johannesburg," said Morero.
