Three arrested in Makwassie for alleged hitchhiking robbery in Wolmaransstad

Wolmaransstad - A woman, who was hitchhiking from Wolmaransstad to Vryburg, was allegedly robbed at gunpoint after accepting a lift from occupants of a white Volkswagen Polo, leading to the arrest of three suspects in Makwassie

The incident occurred on the 12th August 2026, at approximately 15:20 along the Wolmaransstad/Schweizer-Reneke Road. It has been alleged that about three kilometers outside Wolmaransstad, the driver pointed what appeared to be a firearm at the victim and demanded her money and personal belongings. She was allegedly dropped off at an isolated area

Unknown to the suspects, the victim had concealed her cellphone and managed to photograph the vehicle. The photograph was circulated through community groups, resulting in a lookout being issued

Following a swift police response to information received, two males and a female, aged between 26 and 39, were traced and arrested in Makwassie. The victim's property was also recovered

Preliminary investigation established that the firearm allegedly used during the robbery was an imitation firearm, and an additional charge in terms of the Firearms Control Act is expected to be added

The owner of the vehicle has also been linked to an alleged business robbery that occurred on Sunday, 9th August 2026, along the Broadbent N12 in Wolmaransstad

The suspects appeared before the Wolmaransstad Magistrate's Court on Friday, 14th August 2026, facing charges relating to the alleged robbery and possession of an imitation firearm, as well as the related business robbery

The state in the case against the former National Assembly Speaker, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, said it will produce evidence to show that she used code words linked to her ancestral calling to solicit bribes. A 44-year-old police sergeant, attached to the Kanana Detective Branch, was arrested by members of the Hawks' Serious Corruption Investigation on Friday, 07 August 2026, for alleged corruption and defeating the ends of justice.
