The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers, has welcomed the arrest of two suspects and the recovery of three unlicensed firearms, 39 rounds of ammunition, a magazine and two toy pistols during separate operations conducted in the Waterberg and Vhembe Districts. The operations form part of intensified policing operations, including Operation Retshepeng, targeting illegal activities and illegal firearms across the province.
A 37-year-old Zimbabwean national, Ndlovu British, appeared before the Tomburke Periodical Court on Thursday, 20 August 2026, following his arrest after two unlicensed firearms and ammunition were recovered at the Grobler’s Bridge Port of Entry in the Tomburke policing area.
The suspect is remanded in custody until 17 October 2026 for further investigation after abandoning his bail application.
It is alleged that on Tuesday, 18 August 2026, at about 08:00, members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) were conducting a patrol along the borderline when they spotted three males walking in the vicinity.
The members approached one of the men, who was carrying a school bag, and conducted a search of the bag. During the search, two firearms and ammunition were discovered.
Preliminary investigations established that one of the recovered firearms was reported stolen during a house robbery registered at Johannesburg Central SAPS in August 2025.
In a separate operation, members of the Vhembe District Detectives Task Team and Levubu Detectives arrested a 36-year-old suspect allegedly linked to a carjacking committed at Mashau Thenga village in December 2022.
The suspect was arrested during an early-morning operation at Lwamondo, Ha-Mugumeli village, in Vuwani policing area, on Thursday, 20 August 2026.
The arrest follows information received on 17 August 2026 regarding the whereabouts of a suspect allegedly involved in a carjacking reported in the Levubu policing area.
The carjacking occurred during the night of 10 December 2022 at Mashau Thenga, where a white Toyota Corolla was allegedly hijacked.
During the arrest, Police recovered:
One unlicensed 9mm pistol with the serial number filed off, nine ammunition, one magazine and two toy pistols. A separate case of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition was opened in the Vuwani policing area.
Lieutenant General Scheepers commended the members involved in both operations, including the SANDF members who assisted in the recovery of the firearms.
“Illegal firearms remain a major enabler of violent crime. Every firearm recovered is one less weapon that can potentially be used end lives of innocent people. We encourage our communities to continue sharing information with the Police and our law enforcement partners so that together we can make Limpopo safer,” concluded Lieutenant General Scheepers.
Police investigations into both matters are continuing.
