Tshireletso Malebatsane has been announced as the Mayoral Candidate for the upcoming Local Government Elections

The Economic Freedom Fighters, EFF member, Tshireletso Malebatsane has been announced as the Mayoral Candidate ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections, Malebatsane is currently the Speaker of Maquassi Hills Municipal Council

Malebatsane became the Speaker of the Council following the removal of the Speaker, Sarah Nkatlo through a Vote of No Confidence few months back. Nkatlo was removed by a majority vote after she allegedly contradicted the council by attempting to appoint a new Chief Financial Officer and Director of Community Services

Malebatsane has been a party heavyweight since he became part of the EFF and has been at the forefront of the Maquassi Hills sub-district

His appointment as the Speaker of the Council, broke the record the ANC held for many years, showing that power sharing is important despite differences in the party and the council. The African National Congress has been leading the municipality for years and now the EFF aims to take on the Maquassi Hills Municipality come the 2026 Local Government Elections

The municipality has been engulfed by a series of service delivery challenges, financial mismanagement and maladmistration. The municipality has also seen a series of political infights which hampered services to communities in Maquassi Hills

Speaking to Wolmaransstad Link previously, Nkatlo said, municipal officials have been misusing patrol cards and other resources dedicated to cater the community needs

The political infights, has continued to threaten service delivery provision to communities over the years. To-date, the municipality is struggling to provide adequate services such as water, refuse removal and road infrastructure to some areas due to lack of budget to cater for such needs

The municipality has also embarked on tankering water to residents, who are now questioning the tendering system in Maquassi Hills. The continuous supply of water through tankering has been the municipality's measure to residents without taps and proper sanitation

Some of the new settlements that have been there for couple of years are still without proper tap and sanitation systems as some remain incomplete to-date

Malebatsane's appoint as Speaker of the Council, became a new dawn for Maquassi Hills politics which scrambles to hold power for the communities that are supposed to be served with dignity and purpose, failure to provide residents with some services has also continued to threaten the municipality on its own

Now that Tshireletso Malebatsane is the EFF's Mayoral Candidate ahead of the upcoming Local Government Elections, it will be seen who takes the front seat at the municipality as the red party aims to overtake the ANC and other opposition parties in Maquassi Hills
