The SPAR Proteas faced a formidable challenge as they took on Jamaica in the three-test Margaret Beckford Sunshine Series, which began on January 18, 2025. Netball South Africa has announced the 15-member squad that will compete in Kingston, led by captain Khanyisa Chawane.
The team includes dynamic players like Elmerè van der Berg, who was named Best Shooter at the African Netball Cup in December. Jamaica, currently ranked third in the world, will provide a tough opponent, with the SPAR Proteas having secured only three victories in their 18 previous matches against the Sunshine Girls.
In an exciting development, the SPAR Baby Proteas (South Africa's under-21 team) will also travel to Jamaica to play a friendly series against their Jamaican counterparts. This experience will be invaluable in preparing the team for the 2025 Netball World Youth Cup in Gibraltar.
Netball SA president Cecilia Molokwane emphasized the importance of this international experience, stating that it will benefit both the Proteas and the Baby Proteas in their preparations for future competitions.
The SPAR Proteas squad includes:
- Defenders: Boitumelo Mahloko, Sanmarie Visser, Ane Retief, Nicola Smith, Jamie van Wyk
- Mid-Court: Kamogelo Maseko, Tarle Mathe, Khanyisa Chawane, Refiloe Nketsa, Jeante Strydom
- Shooters: Nichole Breedt, Rolene Streutker, Elmerè van der Berg, Ine-Mari Venter, Owethu Ngubane
The SPAR Baby Proteas squad includes:
- Mbali Diphoko, Michelle van der Merwe, Giada Prinsloo, Lisa Ingwersen, Thato Legodi, Jade Atkins, Karla Victor, Kyla Dames, Noncubeko Mjaliswa, Phophi Nematangari, Kiara van Eeden, Zahrah Noah, Ametisse Bandu, Luca Keun, Zionne Grobler
The Margaret Beckford Sunshine Series took place on January 18, 22, and 25, 2025, in Kingston, Jamaica.
