Electricity Minister held engagements with District to discuss future energy solutions 




The  Minister of Electricity,  Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, engaged with Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Leadership on future energy solutions at the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality's Disaster Risk Management Centre Offices 

The District Municipality said, the engagement marked a significant step towards shaping a more sustainable and energy-resilient future, as the Minister of Electricity, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, visited the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality Disaster Centre

The Minister was warmly hosted by District Mayor Cllr Nikiwe Num, and was joined by the Mayors, Municipal Managers, MMCs, Chief of Staffs, and senior managers from the three local municipalities. The visit was part of an ongoing dialogue to explore urgent solutions to the region’s electricity challenges

Last year, Mayor Num introduced the visionary Waste to Energy Programme — a project still in the pipeline but promising to turn environmental waste into electricity

Maquassi Hills is among municipalities in the District  that are part of the Waste-To-Energy project 

MHLM Housing Dept warns those not living in their stands  to do so 




The Department of Housing in the Maquassi Hills Local Municipality  - MHLM has warned RDP house applicants who are currently not in their allocated stands to immediately move in to allow process of allocation to proceed without disturbances  

The warning came after there were rumours that empty stands will be allocated to  residents who are in need of stands 

The Housing Department within the municipality refuted these claims after reviewing it's decision to allocate residents who are in need of stands 

The department held engagements with the Ext 17 and 18 residents in the morning of Friday, 20 June 2025 to clear the air amid escalating rumours that caused panic amongst the residents 

The department said, a list of stand applicants will be reviewed as to who is a legal recipient of a stand that has been allocated to them

Residents who are legal recipients of stands have been urged to head to Maquassi Hills Municipal Offices and provide proof of allocation or proof of residence. This is to curb the misunderstanding of removing legal owners of stands after rumours that spreaded amongst residents

Kgakala residents calling for more secondary schools in the area




 Some of the residents of Kgakala are calling for more senior public schools to be built in the area 

Residents said, the Department of Education failed them

Tiragalo Secondary is the current public school which serves the entire neighborhood of Kgakala, however, some of learners within the area, have decided to be enrolled in nearby schools in Rulaganyang and Tswelang respectively, each and every academic year due to overcrowding and lack of spaces at Tiragalo 

"We need more than 2 secondary schools in Leeudoringstad. I see no reason why MHESS was built at Wolmaransstad whereas we have one secondary school which caters for three primary schools in this area at this point"

Residents said, the municipality and the Department of Education in North West failed the citizens of Leeudoringstad

In 2023, The Public Works and Infrastructure Department that was led by Deputy Minister, Bernice Swarts promised to skatch down designs for a new senior public school to eliminate overcrowding at Tiragalo Secondary School, however, that plan is still in the pipelines

District held a fire awareness campaign in Kgakala to educate community on fire safety 




The District Municipality held a collaborative fire awareness campaign in Kgakala in the  Ext 4, Leeudoringstad, with various departments and organizations coming together to educate the community on fire safety

The event saw participation from the Dr. Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality Fire Department, Working on Fire from Wolwespruit Nature Reserve, the Community Police Forum (CPF), and Community Safety Patrollers from the Leeudoringstad Police Station

Mr. Kgomokae, a key speaker at the event, emphasized the importance of responsible behavior to prevent fires

 "Reducing alcohol intake is crucial, as intoxication can lead to careless actions like leaving a paraffin stove or 'mbawula' alight, which can cause unnecessary fires and damage to property" 

Mr. Kgomokae also highlighted several crucial fire safety tips for homeowners

 "Having an alternative exit door in your home and familiarizing yourself with the layout can be lifesaving in a fire emergency"
