Makwassie - Wolmaransstad Link has learned that a trailer-truck which was carrying hazardous chemicals overturned due to a collision with a light delivery vehicle on the R502
The truck was travelling through the R502 route in the morning of the 19th of March 2025. Wolmaransstad Link also learned that the truck was carrying ammonium nitrate during the collision and overturn between Makwassie and Leeudoringstad
Wolmaransstad Link has done a research to find out more about ammonium nitrate
Ammonium nitrate is a white crystalline salt, a strong oxidizing agent, and a commonly used high-nitrogen fertilizer, also used as a component in explosives.
Here's a more detailed breakdown:
The Chemical Formula of ammonium nitrate is NH₄NO₃, it's appearance is odorless, colorless or white to gray crystals. It is highly soluble in water and is used as fertilizer for primary source of nitrogen for plants
It has also been used in explosives in mining and quarrying, often mixed with fuel oil (ANFO)
Ammonium nitrate is also strong oxidizing agent, meaning it can support and accelerate combustion
More on the accident, the road was closed for hours as sweeping operations went underway, the Department of Transport Management and Community Safety in North West alerted motorists to take caution following truck-delivery vehicle accident
The truck driver was seriously injured in the crash and was transported to the hospital for urgent medical treatment
