Chaos erupted recently as scores of municipal workers downed tools and gathered outside the Lekwa-Teemane Municipal Building, demanding immediate provision of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
The workers, responsible for critical services such as sewerage, road maintenance, refuse collection, plumbing, cleaning, and parks upkeep, say they’ve been operating without basic safety gear for over two years.
“We’re exposed to raw sewage, sharp objects, and chemicals almost daily, yet no gloves, no boots, no overalls, nothing. It’s like we don’t matter,” said one worker, speaking to Morongwa News on condition of anonymity for fear of victimisation.
By 9am, all municipal offices had shut their doors, with protestors blocking entry and exit points. There was no sign of management addressing the crowd, and workers warned that services would remain disrupted until their demands are met.
Community members arriving to access services were turned away, many expressing shock and frustration at the situation.
“This isn’t just about workers. If they get injured or fall ill, service delivery suffers. We all suffer,” said one resident.
