Some residents still left with no power to their households

Makwassie - Maquassi Hills residents are left without electricity into their house as they report that their meter boxes still shows EEE or EEE3

In 2024 Eskom urged its customers to re-code their prepaid electricity meters ahead of the deadline that was in place.  Eskom said, it won't be able to assist anyone with their meters after the 24 November 2024 deadline

However, that has left clueless residents in the dark after not knowing what to do and how to do it

Residents  raced against time to have their prepaid meters registered, re-coded & updated. Various households are currently left without electricity, this is due to their meters not accepting newly bought units after they ran low resulting in their houses running dark

Some meter boxes aren't registered currently proving the process of re-coding as difficult. Residents from Lebaleng in Makwassie & other areas from Maquassi Hills had been at the Eskom Offices in Wolmaransstad to seek clarity on the re-coding & registering their meter boxes, however, they were given forms to sign while other meters still have a problem of showing EEEE, 33333 instead of r2:2 or 2

Frustrated residents raced against time to have their meters fixed before deadline

Eskom said, prepaid users needed to update their meters before Sunday, the deadline that was in place, which was the 24th of November 2024

Some meters no longer accept newly bought tokens & and the utility had said in a statement  that those who did not decide their meter  will need to replace them and that could cost up to R12,00

“Meters still using KRN1 (Key Revision Number 1) will no longer accept electricity tokens after Sunday, 24 November 2024”

“This means that once your current credit is depleted, you will lose power, and the meter will become inoperable” - Eskom

Eskom said those with meters still on KRN1 have likely not purchased electricity for more than six months or might be using unauthorised tokens

It added that it was critical for all customers to buy electricity tokens from authorised vendors

Eskom provided details on how users can verify if their meter is ready:

Code: 1844 6744 0738 4377 2416 on the meter keypad. If it shows 1 or 1.2, the meter must be recoded. If it shows 2 or 2.2, the meter is already updated and requires no further action

To complete the recoding:

Enter the first 20 digits of the recode token.Enter the second 20 digits of the recode token. Finally, enter the 20-digit token from the latest electricity purchase to recharge your meter

“Please refer to the dashboard on the Eskom website for the updated figures of the Eskom Key Revision Number rollover project progress” - Eskom
