Rustenburg Local Municipality has launched a large-scale, multi-stakeholder law enforcement operation aimed at curbing crime and enforcing municipal by-laws across identified hotspot areas.
The operation, known as Operation Shanela, commenced following a joint parade held at Tlhabane Police Station. It brings together the South African Police Service, the Municipal Law Enforcement Unit, the Rustenburg Rapid Response Brigade, and Immigration officials in a coordinated push to strengthen public safety.
Focus on compliance and hotspots
Municipal authorities said the operation will enforce key legislation including the Criminal Procedure Act, Firearms Control Act, Liquor Act, Dangerous Weapons Act, and the Second-Hand Goods Dealers Act, alongside municipal by-laws.
Law enforcement teams have begun crime prevention patrols and by-law compliance checks in four priority areas:
1. Tlhabane
2. Zinniaville
3. Rustenburg North
4. Lefaragatlha
“The continuous operation seeks to combat lawlessness, deter criminal activities, and enhance public safety throughout the jurisdiction of Rustenburg Local Municipality,” the municipality said in a statement.
Call for community cooperation
Residents have been urged to cooperate with officers on the ground and to continue reporting suspicious activities to the relevant authorities.
“Through collaborative efforts, law enforcement agencies remain committed to creating safer communities and maintaining law and order across the municipality,” the statement concluded."
