SAMWU affiliated employees wants Maquassi Hills Municipal Manager to resign

Wolmaransstad - The South African Municipal Workers Union - (SAMWU) members in Maquassi Hills sub-district are calling for an immediate resignation of the Municipal Manager, Thulile Mbonami over provident/pension fund crisis

Meanwhile the South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) in North West has called for disbandment of the municipality

Municipal employees delivered memorandum of demands to the Maquassi Hills Municipal Offices on Friday, 13 June 2026

SAMWU members have been protesting for weeks over lapsed policies that were not payed monthly. Members say, they have been inquiring about the issue, however, the person responsible - being the Municipal Manager said, she doesn't know what transpired

As a result, this issue has led to SAMWU affiliated employees at the municipality to down tools for weeks

"For 15 years that I have worked at the municipality, we are experiencing an issue with the lapsing of our policies and pension fund due to not being payed, so we took this initiative because it is now enough. We have been raising this matter to our employer as to where do our money go because our monies have been deducted and our payslips shows that monies have been deducted and don't reach service providers , when she responds she says she doesn't know. To date she has not reverted to us regarding the issue" - Concerned SAMWU affiliated employee

Employees say, if the Municipal Manager, Thulile Mbonani is incapable of  working in their  municipality must vacate

" If the Municipal Manager cannot work in our municipality must leave. This is the first time we experience this kind of an issue since we worked in this municipality. At this stage we feel that the Municipal Manager must leave our municipality because she inconvenience us and our families" - Concerned SAMWU affiliated employee

The Office of the Speaker of Maquassi Hills has weighed in on the matter, Spokesperson, Daniel Mekgwe said, the employees have fair concerns as to why they demand the Municipal Manager to vacate the municipality

"I believe they have reasonable reasons as to why  they are calling for the removal of the MM, as we are aware, the MM is appointed by the council, so we as the Office of the Speaker is to bring the item to the council and they will take it from there. I believe that they expressed their frustrations on the memorandum and as the Office of the Speaker, ours is to ensure that the municipality takes to account what actually the workers are demanding of them" -  The Office of the Speaker of Maquassi Hills Spokesperson, Daniel Mekgwe

"The council here has proven to be
be useless for a very long time, why are we still having this council here, they could not account to SCOPA for anything. Now what is the point of having them here. The challenges that are facing the community here, are challenges we can afford to tolerate or ignore as SANCO. It's been a long time, we have been subjected to this nonsense for a very long time, that's why these people must go" - The South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) representative
