DA launched local election manifesto at Joburg's Mary Fitzgerald Square


The long weekend started with major manifesto developments for South Africa's two largest political parties. 

Democratic Alliance (DA) supporters converged on Mary Fitzgerald Square in Johannesburg for the party's election manifesto launch, where it was set to detail its local governance priorities. 

"If you are part of a criminal syndicate in Joburg, let me give you some advice: run."

- DA Johannesburg mayoral candidate Helen Zille vows to clamp down on criminality in the metro.

The party is launching it's election manifesto in the Johannesburg city centre.

The party aimed to take over the mayorship of the City of Johannesburg metro via Helen Zille's nomination. 

Supporters were bussed in from across the province for what the DA said would be its largest outdoor event in a city centre. 

Among those who stepped off a bus was 24-year-old Tebogo Mokwena, who said he joined the party with his future family in mind. 

"[We want them] to give us jobs, fix our streets, and fix our economy so that our children can grow up to have a good life," Mokwena said. 

DA representatives at the venue said they had plans to stabilise municipal service delivery, including fixing water and sewage infrastructure.

Pastor and accomplice appeared in court for alleged tender fraud after arrests in Wolmaransstad, Potchefstroom and Mahikeng

High Court interdicts Ramaphosa's impeachment inquiry for limited period

Parliament’s impeachment committee will not be able to commence public hearings into the Phala Phala saga until the Western Cape High Court decides whether the report it is relying on should be set aside. State will produce evidence to show Mapisa-Nqakula used code words to solicit bribes from SANDF contractor

The state in the case against the former National Assembly Speaker, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, said it will produce evidence to show that she used code words linked to her ancestral calling to solicit bribes. The former National Assembly Speaker is on trial in the Pretoria High Court on corruption charges. She is accused of soliciting and accepting bribes of R4.5 million from a South African National Defence Force (SANDF) contractor. At the time, between 2016 and 2019, Mapisa-Nqakula was Minister of Defence.
