Gwarube urges concerned parties to comment on BELA Act draft regulations


Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube is encouraging all interested South Africans and parents to read and comment on the additional Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA) Act draft regulations.

The department published the latest regulations as part of the ongoing implementation of the BELA Act.

The publication of the regulations covers four main areas, which include school governing body elections and teacher development centres.

Gwarube said the regulations are intended to provide additional clarity, consistency and practical support in four areas in which schools, governing bodies and education departments must give effect to the amended law.

Gwarube said the legislation is already in force, and its implementation continues across the basic education sector ever since the Act came into effect.

The regulations also cover additional remuneration for state-employed educators and other qualifying state employees undertaking approved additional duties.

"BELA implementation must be lawful, responsible and practical and it must be informed by meaningful public participation. I therefore encourage all interested South Africans to read the draft regulations and make their voices heard before the public comment period closes on the 5th of September."

Gwarube said the publication of the draft regulations allows parents, teachers, learners, school governing bodies, civil society and all interested South Africans to scrutinise the proposals and make submissions before they’re finalised.

Pastor and accomplice appeared in court for alleged tender fraud after arrests in Wolmaransstad, Potchefstroom and Mahikeng

Wolmaransstad - Three suspects saw court over alleged tender fraud. High Court interdicts Ramaphosa's impeachment inquiry for limited period

Parliament’s impeachment committee will not be able to commence public hearings into the Phala Phala saga until the Western Cape High Court decides whether the report it is relying on should be set aside. On Friday, the court found in favour of President Cyril Ramaphosa to interdict the proceedings, in which he is facing charges over his conduct related to foreign currency being stored and, subsequently, stolen from his farm in 2020. State will produce evidence to show Mapisa-Nqakula used code words to solicit bribes from SANDF contractor

The state in the case against the former National Assembly Speaker, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, said it will produce evidence to show that she used code words linked to her ancestral calling to solicit bribes. The former National Assembly Speaker is on trial in the Pretoria High Court on corruption charges. She is accused of soliciting and accepting bribes of R4.5 million from a South African National Defence Force (SANDF) contractor.
