Department of Corrections in Rustenburg held wellness, health and fun event

"All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy."

This well-known saying became the driving force behind a special Wellness Day organized for officials from the Rustenburg Area Commissioner’s Office and Rustenburg Community Corrections.

Led by Manager Special Programmes, Ms. Rose Tlhwaele, the event took place on March 20, 2025, at the Rustenburg Recreational Club. Despite being arranged at the last minute, the turnout was impressive, with both officials and stakeholders showing up in large numbers to participate.

The event kicked off with a refreshing five-kilometer walk around the premises, setting the tone for a day dedicated to physical and mental well-being. Management Area Employee Assistance Practitioner (EAP), Ms. Lerato Moyo, emphasized the significance of such initiatives.

"Wellness events like these are crucial because they promote physical, mental, and emotional well-being. A healthier workforce is a more productive one," she said, expressing gratitude to the employer for recognizing the need for such engagements. She also encouraged attendees to take advantage of the free health screenings available.

As part of the program, Carina Muller the Manager of Social Work Services delivered an insightful presentation on mental health. She addressed critical issues such as stress, anxiety, burnout, and depression, providing practical coping mechanisms for managing these challenges in the workplace.

Adding to the day’s awareness initiatives, renowned homeopath Dr. Koketso Ramoupi conducted an informative session on Tuberculosis (TB). She outlined key symptoms, including night sweats and persistent coughing, and urged attendees to seek medical advice if they experienced such signs.

Rustenburg Area Commissioner, Ms. Dipolelo Mashumu, encouraged all officials to seize the opportunity to engage with the various service providers present.

"This day is about us and our well-being. Let’s take full advantage of the resources available," she said, reinforcing the importance of self-care and proactive health management.

The event concluded with an energetic aerobics session, followed by traditional indigenous games. Many officials found joy in revisiting childhood memories through games like legusha, adding a nostalgic and cultural touch to the day.

In the end, the Wellness Day not only promoted physical health but also fostered team spirit, mental resilience, and a sense of community among Rustenburg officials. As the event wrapped up, one message stood out loud and clear: a happy and healthy workforce is the key to a productive and motivated team.
