City Report Newspaper has reported that raw sewage flows through the streets of Khuma near Stilfontein in the City of Matlosana Municipality.
Residents of Khuma in Rehauhetswe Street at Extension 9 in Ward 32 are left in the stench of mouldy sewage and large ponds of murky stagnant water.
One of the affected community members, Alleta Mokwena confirmed that they have complained about overflowing sewage in the area. Unfortunately the municipality has not responded yet to their situation.
Speaking on the basis of anonymity, one resident confirmed that the smell has forced her to always close her door.
Sewage inhalation can lead to various diseases relating to breathing problems, headaches as well as loss of weight as a result of respiratory distress
Wolmaransstad Link made a further research on the causes of sewer blockade
A sewage smell, often described as a rotten egg odor, is caused by sewer gases like hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, and methane, which are byproducts of decaying organic matter in the sewage system.
While exposure to low levels of sewer gas isn't typically dangerous, chronic or high-level exposure can lead to health problems.
Causes of Sewer Gas Smell:
Plumbing Issues:
Blocked toilets, leaking pipes, or dry P-traps (the U-shaped pipes under sinks and tubs) can allow sewer gases to escape.
Ventilation Problems:
Blocked vent pipes prevent sewer gases from being vented outdoors, causing them to build up inside the house.
Dry Trap Seals:
When trap seals dry up (the water that forms a barrier in drains), sewer gases can escape.
Cracks or Weak Seals:
Cracks or weak seals in drain fittings or sewer line connections can allow gases to leak.
Nearby Infrastructure:
Sewage pump stations or treatment plants can release sewer gases into the surrounding area, especially during dry weather.
Symptoms of Sewer Gas
Exposure:
Headaches, dizziness, and nausea.
Eye and throat irritation.
In extreme cases, prolonged exposure can lead to coma or death.
How to Address a Sewer Gas Smell:
Ventilate your home:
Open windows and doors to allow fresh air to circulate and reduce the concentration of sewer gas.
Refill dry trap seals:
Run water in sinks, tubs, and floor drains to create a barrier against sewer gases.
Inspect and repair seals:
Check for loose or damaged seals around toilets and in other plumbing fixtures.
Clear blocked vents:
Contact a plumber to clear any blockages in vent pipes.
Call a plumber:
If you suspect a serious plumbing issue or have concerns about exposure, contact a licensed plumber for inspection and repair.
