Gang violence grips area of Ipelegeng

The past few days have seen a surge in gang-related violence in Ipelegeng township near Schweizer-Reneke, with gangs reportedly issuing threats, robbing, and assaulting residents.

The situation has left the community gripped by fear, as streets become unsafe once the sun sets. Armed with pangas, knives, steel rods, and even firearms, the groups have turned various sections of the township into danger zones.

A week ago, Ipelegeng Community Patrollers reported seizing a firearm and knives during their night patrols. Then on Friday, residents of Extension 8 took a stand, reportedly confronting one of the gangs. It is alleged that several of the gang members were "properly disciplined" by the community during the confrontation.

The violence persisted into the weekend. On Saturday and Sunday, various sections, including Extension 5, experienced unrest. Community members were once again forced indoors early after a group of youths took to the streets armed with dangerous weapons while hurling insults and threats.

In another incident on Monday morning, a 21-year-old man was treated  at the local clinic with a gunshot wound to the leg.

According to North West police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone, the shooting followed an altercation, which began the previous evening and escalated again the next morning.

“It is alleged that at around 09:00, a shooting incident was reported at the local clinic.

On arrival, the police found a 21-year-old male with what appeared to be a gunshot wound on the leg. He alleged that he was shot by someone,” said Mokgwabone.

The community has called for urgent intervention and visible policing.
