North West mother survives a blade attack initiated by husband

What should have been a typical school day turned into a scene of terror and near-death for a North West  mother — attacked in front of her child by the man she once called her husband

On mid April 2025, outside a Christian school in North West, a woman was ambushed by her estranged husband. Armed with a machete and a knife, he shattered her car window, dragged her out, and slit her throat — all while her eight-year-old daughter watched from inside the vehicle.

“He came to kill me, he didn’t care that my child was there. He didn’t care who saw. He wanted me dead.”

Their four-year marriage had unravelled with reported abuse, threats, and the theft of her firearm. Divorce proceedings were underway, but he allegedly refused to sign the final papers.

She believes his rage was fuelled by jealousy after discovering she had a new partner. “He stalked my boyfriend online. That’s when everything escalated.”

The attack left her with bruises, a sprained wrist, chest wounds, and a deep laceration to her throat — one that narrowly missed taking her life. But in a moment of sheer willpower and community courage, she escaped.

A longtime friend who witnessed the assault rushed to her aid.

“I saw him and I knew something was wrong, I ran to my car, grabbed a wooden bat, and hit him. She managed to break free, and I held her wound as tightly as I could. I honestly thought I was watching her die.”

In a case that has left many outraged , the legal handling of this brutal attack has been anything but clear. Police confirmed that the suspect had been released from custody. No official explanation was given — only vague references to “evidentiary issues.”
The news sparked immediate concern and fear.

“I’m absolutely terrified. He once said, ‘If you leave me, I will kill you.’ Now I know he meant it. If he walks free, he’ll finish what he started.”

The story took a dramatic twist. Police suddenly confirmed the suspect had been re-arrested.

But not for the violent attack that left his wife bleeding on the roadside…
Instead, he was taken into custody for a separate Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) matter, involving the contravention of a protection order.

Meanwhile, the original charge of Assault with Intent to Cause Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH) still stands. According to SAPS, this charge may be upgraded to attempted murder, depending on the court’s review of the medical report (J88).

The suspect appeared before the  court  where both matters were expected to be addressed.

The victim has tried repeatedly to get answers.
