As part of the June 16 commemorations, the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) John Pitso Branch in Lekwa-Teemane held a powerful march to the Department of Education offices in Christiana, where they handed over a memorandum highlighting long-standing education and development issues affecting the youth in the area.
The march drew attention from residents and was also joined by Youth League NEC Member and Member of Parliament, Hon. Gaolatlhe Kgabo, who walked alongside the youth to show solidarity.
Branch Secretary Kagiso Kgabo told Morongwa News that the situation in Utlwanang has reached a crisis point.
“We are deeply concerned about the perpetual collapse of infrastructure at Le Rona Secondary School, the only secondary school in Utlwanang. The school currently accommodates more than 1,800 learners, with overcrowded classes of up to 80 learners each. There’s no functional library, no science laboratory, and the toilets are not working,” said Kgabo.
In the memorandum, the ANCYL makes several demands, including:
- Mobile classrooms to ease overcrowding;
- The appointment of more teachers;
- The construction of two new high schools, one in Utlwanang and another to serve Extensions 3, 4, and 5.
They also called for the establishment of a TVET College in the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District, stating that it is the only district in the province without one.
“We demand a fully equipped TVET College, with a curriculum aligned to the economic development priorities of this district,” said Kgabo.
“The Lekwa-Teemane Local Municipality has already made land available in Christiana for this purpose. Now, we expect action.”
After the march, attention turned to the sports field, where the ANCYL hosted a two-day soccer tournament to further promote youth unity and development through sport. Spectators gathered in large numbers, bringing a festive mood to the township.
