'My Tree, My Oxygen' district engaged to revamp National Greening Programme

Wolmaransstad - Maquassi Hills Municipality was among municipalities in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda that attended a meeting with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment to engage in reinforcing the implementation strategy for the One Million Trees initiative an ambitious National Greening Programme that promotes environmental restoration and food security

The district said, this marked a significant step in the journey towards a greener and healthier environment

In Attendance were key stakeholders that included:

The Dr. Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality, DEDECT, City of Matlosana, Maquassi Hills and JB Marks Local Municipalities and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment

The Department encouraged all municipalities and community based stakeholders across the DRKKDM to rally behind the initiative and help drive its success

Their current focus is to widen the circle of support and secure more partnerships from private companies, civil society, and local communities

 Why Greening?

“Greening” in this context refers to the planting of trees and vegetation, especially in areas that can contribute to food security and environmental rehabilitation. The aim is not only to beautify our surroundings but also to restore the balance of nature and reduce the effects of climate change

Targeted Areas:

Schools – To integrate environmental education into learning and inspire young eco-champions.
Degraded & abandoned parks – Restoring these spaces for community use.
RDP housing areas – Enhancing living conditions by greening newly developed yards

Progress so far
Year 1: 860,000 trees planted – slightly below the target.
Years 2 & 3: Over 1.3 million trees successfully planted – a remarkable achievement that exceeded expectations

Thus the DFFE is urging all stakeholders to commit themselves on the project,as it is designed to span over a 5-year period (with renewals every five years), requires the collective effort of government, communities, schools, NGOs, and the private sector. Businesses and organizations are encouraged to pledge their support to this life-giving cause
