NWPL's Deputy Chief Whip led a Mandela Day Mining Symposium in Zeerust

On Friday, 25 July 2025, the Deputy Chief Whip of the North West Provincial Legislature, Hon. Magagane, led a Mining Symposium in Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality, Zeerust, as part of her Mandela Day outreach programme.

The event was held under the theme: “It’s in Our Hands to Combat Poverty and Inequality,” honouring Nelson Mandela’s enduring legacy of justice, inclusion, and empowerment.

The symposium attracted close to 150 participants, including representatives from the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, Council for Geoscience, the banking sector, and community stakeholders.

The session focused on unlocking economic opportunities in the mining sector while addressing poverty and inequality in the province.

Attendees received detailed presentations from the Council for Geoscience on mineral exploration prospects, geological data on mineral resource potential in the region, and funding opportunities through its Exploration Fund.

In addition, the MEC for the Department of Community Safety and Transport, Hon. Wessels Morweng, delivered a presentation on the safety risks and socio-economic impact of illegal mining, outlining trends currently under investigation.

He committed to further engagements in partnership with the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, including a joint crisis meeting scheduled to take place within 14 days.

Discussions highlighted key challenges such as the lack of mineral beneficiation, slow progress in transformation, and barriers to entry into the mining industry, particularly for historically disadvantaged communities.

Hon. Magagane emphasized that the fight against poverty and inequality requires collaborative action.

“This symposium demonstrates that by working together—government, private sector, and communities—we can unlock opportunities that uplift our people and strengthen our economy,” said Hon. Magagane.

The event concluded with firm resolutions aimed at fostering economic inclusion, accelerating transformation, and ensuring that mining activities contribute meaningfully to local development.

“Let us honour Madiba’s legacy through action—by working together to build a more just, equitable, and prosperous society for all,” stated Hon. Magagane
