Brits detectives, with Hartbeespoortdam Crime Prevention, crack brutal 2023 murder
The Acting Provincial Police Commissioner of North West, Major General Patrick Asaneng, has praised the Brits Detectives and their partners at Hartbeespoortdam Crime Prevention for the arrest of three men linked to the gruesome murder of 20-year-old Gontse Makhubela.
The young woman’s mutilated, partly burnt, and badly decomposed body was found dumped at a refuse site in Elandskraal, Brits, on Thursday, 23 November 2023, weeks after her family reported her missing.
Following a painstaking and relentless investigation by the District Serious and Violent Crimes Team, two suspects aged 29 and 38 were arrested on Wednesday, 6 August 2025. Police acted on credible intelligence and diligently pursued all leads, linking the men to the murder after recovering the victim’s cellphone.
A third suspect, apprehended in Winterveldt, Gauteng Province, was found in possession of the deceased’s organs. He is also believed to be involved in the crime.
Further details revealed that the 29-year-old suspect was instructed by the 38-year-old to find a young woman fitting a specific profile for murder, so the latter could use her organs for muthi purposes. The 38-year-old suspect is an illegal Mozambican witchdoctor who claims to be a traditional healer. Under his orders, the victim was kidnapped, brutally murdered, dismembered, and set on fire.
The first two suspects face charges of murder, kidnapping, and violation or defilement of a corpse. The Mozambican suspect will also be charged under Section 49(1) of the Immigration Act for being in the country illegally. They are expected to appear in the Brits Magistrate’s Court today.
The third suspect, also a traditional healer from Mozambique, is due to appear in the Garankuwa Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 11 August 2025.
Investigations ongoing, and police warn that further arrests could follow.
