Tswelelang - The North West MEC for Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation, Virginia Tsotso Tlhapi has officially unveiled the plague to signify the opening of the Maquassi Hills based community library at the Extension 15 in Tswelelang township
The opening, which coincidence with the provincial department's Human Rights Day celebration, was a well-organised affair with variety of events including poetry, book reading, cultural dances, loud music, speeches and library tour
Maquassi Hills Municipality's Speaker, Alderman Sarah Nkatlo joined in the day's event
The library, a near state of the art facility, was designed by Ofentse Mathabathaba
The soft-spoken Mathabatha said he has been working on several library and school projects around the North West province
'I hope the community takes good care of this facility and don't vandalise it,' he said.
The opening of the library also saw other governmental departments rendering their services'
MEC Tlhapi used the platform to remind the residents about the painful apartheid past and urged young people, who are beneficiaries of democracy, to take advantage of the opportunities created by the new dispensation
The MEC also took a special moment to appreciate the University of the North West for their continued partnership in the provincial department's affairs
According to the department building libraries for communities is part of government’s way of correcting historical inequities where it ensures equal access for all citizens, particularly in the previously under-served townships and rural areas
The library is equipped with books, toy library and equipment for visually impaired readers
Provision for free internet access will be made and provided for, by Office of the Premier’s Government Information Technology Officer (GITO), to assist users and students doing research as well as necessary electronic security systems
The library is designed to meet the various information needs of community for toddlers to adults who require sitting and studying
Maquassi Hills Municipality now boasts of six libraries in Wolmaransstad, Makwassie and Leeudoringstad
