Rape and GBV cases identified as worrying in Maquassi Hills

Community of Maquassi Hills has identified rape, Gender Based Violence and Fermicied (GBV&F) cases as the most worrying criminal activities in the municipality

This came out during Anti-Crime and Violence community engagement at Chris Hani Community Hall in Tswelelang

The engagement led by the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management was held in a form of District Development Model (DDM), intended to highlight criminality besieging the smallest of the three local municipalities in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District

Amongst reported cases in the last 12 months for Leeudoringstad, Makwassie and Wolmaranstad include sexual offences attempted murder common assault, robbery theft and cable theft. This seemingly is exacerbated by substance abuse by especially young people

Speaking on behalf of the Community Safety and Transport Management, MEC Wessels Morweng, the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality Executive Mayor, Cllr Nikiwe Num encouraged communities to report criminal cases and work closely with the police

“We know who the criminals are because they come from the communities within which we live. We will never defeat the demons of criminality until we all work tougher as South Africans and stop harbouring those that hurt the society simply because we are related to them. It cannot be correct for families to want to negotiate and say for the sake of the family, we must protect someone who we know abuses the family and is a known criminal,"  Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Executive Mayor Nikiwe Num

The District CPF Chairperson, Dr KK, urged community members to refrain from engaging in criminal activities and encouraged them to actively participate in crime-fighting initiatives by joining local CPF and Community in Blue structures

The Department continues to engage communities with intentions to strengthen the fight against crime across the Province
