North West Department of Education saddened after a block at Tiragalo Secondary in Kgakala burnt down

Leeudoringstad, Kgakala - The North West Department of Education has been left devastated after a block of classrooms burnt down just few days before the commencement of the National Senior Certificate examinations at Tiragalo Secondary School in Kgakala Township near Leeudoringstad in early October 2026

It was reported that on a Friday, a school principal received a call from the staff members who informed her that the school was on fire. Already the police and the fire department were called to the school

The block that was gutted by fire consisted of a library, computer centre, storeroom for textbooks, three classrooms which were used by the Grade 12 learners as an examination centre

The items destroyed by fire were; all ordered textbooks for the 2027 academic year, a micro-oven, a kettle, projector, 6 new doors, table tennis board, all athletics material (male and female attire), packets of toilet papers, stationery for the learners, 80 boxes of typek, and 24 computers

On the same day of the incident, the police managed to arrest five suspects

The Acting MEC for Education in North West, Kenetswe Mosenogi, expressed her devastation, stating that this was the fourth school to have been burnt down within a period of two months

"On behalf of the entire Department, I am extremely upset by the burning down of the entire block of classrooms. Grade 12 learners have lost three classrooms that were intended to serve as their examination centre, as well as many other valuable items. This is totally unacceptable. We cannot tolerate the theft and destruction of learners’ property. This incident is a serious setback for the Department, as we are once again forced to rebuild a school that has been destroyed through criminal acts. I want those who are behind this incident to face the full might of the law and receive lengthy sentences. This will serve as a deterrent to others and send a clear message that school property must be protected and that acts of criminality against our schools will not be tolerated" - The Acting MEC for Education in North West, Kenetswe Mosenogi

MEC Mosenogi further commended the South African Police Service (SAPS) for its swift action in arresting the suspects allegedly responsible for the destruction of the school

The Department secured alternative venues to serve as examination centres for Grade 12 learners, as no one anticipated that the school would be burnt down
