This morning on Health Society, we dip in our attention on Liver detox. We want to learn about the importance of liver detoxing. What's needed to detox your liver???

Studies have shown that Blueberries, strawberries and raspberries are great when on a liver detox. The liver is the body’s primary detoxification organ, constantly working to filter toxins, process nutrients, and maintain overall metabolic balance. The liver naturally detoxifies itself, specific dietary choices can significantly enhance its functional capacity and support its ongoing health

Let's now understand about the crucial role a supportive diet can play on a liver.

Your diet plays a crucial role in a liver function. Certain foods contain compounds that can help optimise the liver’s ability to process and eliminate toxins, reduce inflammation, and support cellular repair. By making strategic dietary choices, you can help your liver to perform at its best.

Eat loads of cruciferous veggies

Cruciferous vegetables are liver superstars. Broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage contain sulfur compounds and glucosinolates that activate liver enzymes responsible for breaking down and eliminating toxins. These vegetables help stimulate the production of protective enzymes that can neutralise potentially harmful substances in the body.

Snack on berries for antioxidants

Berries are exceptional for liver health. Blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries are packed with antioxidants that combat oxidative stress and protect liver cells from damage. Their rich colour indicates high levels of polyphenols and flavonoids, which support the liver’s natural detoxification processes and help reduce inflammation.

Use more of these herbs and spices

Certain herbs have been traditionally used to support liver function. Milk thistle contains silymarin, a compound known for its liver-protective properties. Turmeric offers powerful anti-inflammatory benefits, while dandelion root supports bile production and helps flush toxins. Green tea is another remarkable beverage that provides antioxidants and supports liver enzyme function.

Go for lean protein

Choose lean protein sources that support liver health. Wild-caught fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids, organic eggs, and plant-based proteins like legumes and nuts provide essential amino acids that aid in liver repair and regeneration. Avoid processed meats and focus on high-quality, minimally processed protein options.

Water always plays a role

Water is fundamental to liver function. Proper hydration helps thin bile, supports nutrient transportation, and facilitates the body’s natural detoxification processes. Aim to drink filtered water throughout the day, and consider incorporating herbal teas that offer additional liver-supporting benefits.

Foods to avoid

Reduce intake of foods that burden the liver. Processed foods, refined sugars, excessive alcohol, and saturated fats create additional stress on this vital organ. Limit artificial additives, trans fats, and highly processed snacks that provide little nutritional value and can impede liver function.

On this week's health feature, we give focus on strokes & heart disease, we want to understand the difference and how you can prevent them. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death – and it affects younger people too. On this week's feature, we also learn about the direct impact as well risks stroke & heart diseases pose on human health

How many times does a heart pump blood daily??

A heart pumps life-sustaining blood throughout the body 100,000 times daily via a 97,000-kilometre-long network of vessels. However, this mighty organ increasingly needs protection against two common disorders – heart attacks and strokes.

Categorised as cardiovascular diseases, heart attacks, and strokes are a group of disorders of the heart and blood vessels. In the case of a heart attack, the blood flow to your heart is suddenly blocked. In comparison, a stroke occurs when there is a sudden interruption of blood flow to your brain.

Both events are considered medical emergencies, which, if left untreated or unchecked, can lead to disability or death. In fact, more than 85% of deaths globally are attributed to heart attacks and strokes, according to the World Health Organisation.

Heart attacks are common amongst young people too

While it used to be rare for anyone younger than 40 to have a heart attack, according to a report by McLeod Health, fast-forward to now, 1 in 5 heart attack patients are younger than 40 years of age, and it gets worse. Having a heart attack in your 20s or early 30s has become more common. Furthermore, between the years 2000-2016, the heart attack rate increased by 2% every year in this young age group.

Symptoms of a heart attack include:

Pain or discomfort in the centre of the chest. Pain or discomfort in the arms, the left shoulder, elbows, jaw, or back. You may have trouble breathing, shortness of breath, nausea or vomiting, light-headedness or faintness, a cold sweat, and turning pale. Women are more likely than men to have shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, and back or jaw pain.

Symptoms of a stroke include the sudden onset of:

A powerful headachenumbness of the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body; confusion, difficulty in speaking or understanding speech; difficulty in seeing with one or both eyes; difficulty in walking, dizziness or loss of balance or coordination; severe headaches with no known cause or fainting or unconsciousness.

If you suspect that someone may be having a stroke or heart attack, call for medical help immediately.

Prevention is better than cure

The good news is that most cardiovascular diseases can be prevented by addressing behavioural and environmental risk factors, such as:

Tobacco use, unhealthy diet and obesity physical inactivity, harmful use of alcohol or air pollution

It is, therefore, crucial to detect cardiovascular disease as early as possible so that effective management with counselling and medication can begin. If you are young, whether male or female, do not let the misconception that heart attacks only happen to the elderly stand in the way of seeking treatment. Symptoms such as chest pain and shortness of breath should always be taken seriously.

Gatelapele Learner To Be Laid To Rest On Saturday

TSWELELANG  - A Gatelapele Secondary School learner who was shot to death allegedly by foreign nationals who mistakened him for a robber will be laid to rest in Tswelelang

The school he had been attending has offered support to his family through contributions & condolences throughout the week

The learner who was reportedly ambushed by foreign shop owners in Thambo 1 was assaulted & shot dead afterwards. He was accused of being one of the robbers who shoplifted one of their spaza shop in the Ext 13. The learner had just came from his routine hunting carrying a meat package when an incident occured

It was reported that a learner had just arrived in the Thambo 1 area after a night-time hunting, he arrived early in the morning. Foreign nationals who had seen him passing by, saw him carrying a meat package and believed that he was one of those who had made business robbery at the Ext 13 store, a group of shop owners attacked, assaulted him with a sharp weapon and shot him dead afterwards

After the shooting incident, the Tswelelang community became enraged with anger and attacked foreign nationals & their businesses accusing them of murdering a wrong person

Meanwhile on the other hand regarding the same matter, the Potchefstroom Public Order Policing - POP who were ropped in, struck over a suspect of a daylight robbery at one of foreign owned spaza shops near Reabona Secondary School on the R505 leading to Makwassie following the Thambo 1 incident, this was a pay-back. According a report, police officials who saw this robbery last week rushed to prevent it, at that time, a speeding police van ran over the suspect into a spaza shop wall which was partially collapsed

The van then reversed where the suspect tried to run away, resulting in his death at the back of the same spaza shop, other suspects of this robbery escaped. Police searched for those who escaped to the Ext 5 in the area, but were without luck

Most foreign-owned spaza shops were closed for few days to allow the situation to subside, however calm has been rostored and some of these spaza shops are partially operational as owners try to recover from last week's incidents

Ev Charging Station Launched In Maquassi Hills To Offer Wide Rage Of Services

WOLMARANSSTAD - CHARGE has officially opened its first off-grid, ultra-fast, green electric vehicle (EV) charging station to the public in Wolmaransstad

In late November 2024, CHARGE (formerly Zero Carbon Charge) launched the first renewable energy-powered EV charging station in South Africa

It relies almost entirely on solar and battery power

This will form part of the country’s first national network of 120 solar-powered charging facilities that CHARGE will be rolling out on major highways at 150km intervals over the coming year

“We are thrilled to be officially opening our first off-grid charging station, which marks a significant milestone in South Africa’s transition to EVs and a carbon-free future,” said Joubert Roux, Executive Chairman of CHARGE

“This has been a three-year journey, highlighting our commitment to making our off-grid network a reality as we believe it will benefit South Africans in multiple ways,” he added

The Wolmaransstad off-grid EV station offers six DC fast chargers (25-minute charge) and two AC chargers with a farm stall

CHARGE officials, Deputy Minister of Electricity Samantha Graham-Maré, North West MEC for Economic Development, Environment Conservation and Tourism, Bitsa Lenkopane and Maquassi Hills Local Municipality Mayor Mzwandile Feliti at the launch

Commenting on the event, Deputy Minister of Electricity Samantha Graham-Maré said that “we are actively driving renewable energy investments in South Africa, and I am truly inspired to see the determination and passion that the CHARGE team has displayed in driving this incredible development”

“The project is also aligned with the South African Renewable Energy Masterplan, which will be launched early next year

“The plan’s focus is on renewables driving local manufacturing, which will support projects such as CHARGE’s where off-grid EV charging stations will be developed at scale,” said Graham-Maré

“We are grateful for the immense support shown by the North West Provincial Government and the Maquassi Hills Municipality [as] they were the first government entities in the country to grant approval for the construction of our off-grid charging stations”, said Roux

The Wolmaransstad charging facility, along with the entire network of 120 charging stations, will create an income stream for landowners on which these facilities are built

Landowners will earn 5% of the revenue generated from vehicles charging on their land

Roux said that the company believes that the rollout of the off-grid charging stations across the country will serve as a catalyst for EV migration in South Africa

“CHARGE’s own research shows that an EV charged from Eskom’s predominantly coal-fired power grid indirectly emits 5.8 tonnes of CO2 per year,” said Roux

“In comparison, an average petrol-powered car emits 4.4 tonnes of CO2 per year,” he added

This has been done with CHARGE’s Chinese technology partners, Greencore Energy Solutions and Magic Power, who have provided the charging hardware for the Wolmaransstad charging station

They will also be supplying the hardware for the other charging stations we will be rolling out across the country

“As we plan the rollout of more EV charging stations across the country, we will continue to work closely with government and key partners to help South Africa meet its carbon emissions reduction targets,” said Roux

Vaal Central Warns Of Drinking Water Discoloration

BALKFONTEIN - Vaal Central & Magalies Water Boards have informed residents of Maquassi Hills of a possible excessive discolouration that will be experienced in the drinking water which is distributed from the Balkfontein Water Treatment Plant

Vaal Central said, this is a seasonal phenomenon in nature and occurs annually at the start of the first heavy summer rains. The cause of this discolouration is due to the presence of excessive organic matter in the Vaal River

Despite optimised adjustments made to the concentration of dosing chemicals, increased filter backwashing and disinfection, the appearance and taste of the water will still not be aesthetically acceptable

The water utility further mitigated that the effects of this phenomenon has been continuously be engaged with relevant stakeholders on alternative treatment options. These alternative treatment options can only be implemented after the completion of the extensive infrastructural changes currently being implemented at the Plant

"Vaal Central Water would like to give consumers the assurance that all possible measures are being taken to guarantee safety of water for human consumption. This includes: Monitoring of Residual disinfectants which are increased to ensure proper disinfection and Bacteriological analyses that are monitored closely to ensure all health criteria are met" - Vaal Central Water

According to the water utility, the discolouration of the drinking water does not pose a health risk to humans and the water is safe for human consumption

The public has been encouraged to report any water quality issues to the respective municipality as soon as possible and to the Department of Water and Sanitation. If residents have further queries on water discoloration, they should contact the Department of Water and Sanitation call centre on: 0800 200 200, Phemelo Boitse – Regional Manager at 056 492 0100 or by email: phemelob@vcwater.co.za, Daniel Traut – Executive Scientific Services at 056 492 0359 or by email: danielt@vcwater.co.za during office hours

Vaal Central Water says it is dedicated to providing a reliable water supply and responding effectively to any concerns raised while upholding the highest standards in the water quality, ensuring the safety and reliability of the water supply at the utmost importance

They were hurt as the Stormers’ Champions Cup campaign ended in Paris on Saturday night after John Dobson’s charges went down 31-22 to Racing 92 at the La Defense Arena.

The Stormers travel to Dublin to face Irish giants Leinster in round 10 of the URC, but Dweba, Roos and Hartzenberg are all in doubt for the Aviva Stadium encounter.

Dweba hobbled off early on against Racing while fellow Bok Roos and Hartzenberg took knocks in the second half.

“We’re going to have to check on Joseph, it looks like just a stinger, Suleiman Hartzenberg potentially has a fractured hand, and Evan Roos has done something serious to his cheekbone,” Dobson was quoted post-match in the media.

“They’ll be checked on the X-ray, but we’re looking forward to next week. It’s nice to know that guys like [Leolin] Zas, Seabelo Senatla, Warrick Gelant, Manie Libbok, Deon Fourie and BJ Dixon will be fit next week.

“I just hope those scans from the other players give us a bit of good news.”

The Stormers could still have advanced to the second-tier EPCR Challenge Cup round of 16 in fifth place in Pool 4 but a victory for Sale Sharks yesterday saw the Cape outfit finish last in the group, dashing their hopes of a third consecutive appearance in the EPCR knockout stages.

On the road ahead for his troops following the disappointment in Paris, Dobson said: “There were lots to be proud of, we showed good fight. They were obviously loaded with some world-class players, with nine, 10 or 13 internationals out there.

“We were light a couple of players, but we showed enormous fight. At 24-22 I thought we had every chance to win it. The way we stayed in the fight was very refreshing and the growth of some players we’re investing in or supporting, whether it’s Paul de Villiers, Jonny Roche or Jurie Matthee as a back-up 10.

“And guys like Andre-Hugo and Ruben van Heerden’s performances, those were good for us…”

“I thought Paul de Villiers was excellent, JD Schickerling covered ground as usual and we obviously had two veterans in Frans [Malherbe] and Ali Vermaak,” he added. “The plan was hopefully to get some reward in the scrums, but we didn’t.

“It was a high-impact, fast, high-level game of rugby… extremely fast and extremely physical that will probably give us hope for the future.”

Vodacom Suffered A Blow Of Profits In Earnings

WOLMARANSSTAD - Mobile operator Vodacom has suffered a significant blow to profits, with headline earnings diving close to 20% in the six months ended 30 September 2024.

The group reported flat earnings for the period, growing 1% to R73.54 billion (2023: R72.8 billion). On a ‘normalised’ basis—looking at performance on what Vodacom deems a “comparable basis”—revenue growth was up 10.4%.

The comparable basis adjusts for trading foreign exchange and foreign currency fluctuation and excludes the impact of merger, acquisition and disposal activities to show a like-for-like comparison of results.

Using this metric, Vodacom says that its operating profit for the period was up 9.6%—however, on the books, it was down 5.2% to R16.13 billion (from R17 billion the year prior).

Group service revenue was up 9.9% when adjusted, but in nominal terms, down 1.2% to R58.6 billion.

Net profits for the period are not adjusted. The group’s profits dropped 21.1%, from R9.97 billion in 2023 to R7.86 billion in 2024.

Headline earnings share was down by 19.4% to 353 cents from 438 cents the year prior

Local Banks Takes On Mobile Networks

WOLMARANSSTAD - Several banks have launched mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) with attractive data prices and value-added features that benefit their customers

Unlike fully-fledged mobile network operators, MVNOs don’t operate their own mobile network infrastructure.

They can run with much smaller teams and deliver new features and changes faster than larger operators.

In addition, depending on the wholesale deals they have with their upstream mobile operator, they may be able to experiment more with package structuring and pricing than the traditional players.

The oldest bank-run MVNO in South Africa is FNB Connect.

Launched in 2015, FNB Connect initially roamed on Cell C’s network but added MTN as a roaming partner in June 2023.

FNB Connect had 958,000 subscribers by June 2024 and generated R18.6 billion in revenue in the bank’s 2024 financial year.

However, it lost its title as the country’s biggest MVNO to the two-year-old Capitec Connect sometime in the past year.

As of August 2024, Capitec Connect had 1.2 million active subscribers, up from 900,000 a year earlier. Less than three months later, that number had grown to 1.4 million.

User activity on Capitec Connect’s network has also been impressive, with 29.7 million voice minutes used in 2023, more than tripling to 95.1 million minutes in 2024.

Total mobile data consumption across the network also surged 264% from 1.4 petabytes to 5.1 petabytes.

Combined with Capitec’s other value-added services, the MVNO contributed about R1.5 billion to the bank’s headline earnings in its 2024 financial year.

Capitec Connect runs on Cell C’s network, which is maintained by MTN.

The third biggest bank-run MVNO is Standard Bank Connect, which has amassed over 300,000 customers since launching in 2018.

The MVNO was initially called Standard Bank Mobile but was rebranded in June 2024 as part of the bank’s strategic telecommunications direction.

In addition to introducing new data and voice packages, Standard Bank ditched Cell C and moved over to MTN.

Standard Bank Connect head Kartik Mistry said the transition would be gradual, with customers getting invited to join its pilot programme over time.

The most recently launched bank-run MVNO is Spot Mobile, operated by Bidvest-backed Spot Money.

Rolling out in January 2024, Spot Mobile offers a free prepaid physical SIM or eSIM and several month-to-month packages with monthly mobile data.

As part of its launch deals, it gives prepaid customers R50 in free airtime every month and 1GB of mobile data for the first month.

The most affordable month-to-month offering from Spot Mobile is a 5GB data-only plan priced at R159 per month.

For just R30 more, customers can get the same data with 2,000 voice minutes.

Khuma residents call for reopening & legalisation of abandoned mine

Residents of Khuma, a township in Stilfontein, have called on the government to reopen and legalise an abandoned mining site that has become a hotspot for illegal mining and violence.

They believe reviving the mine could create jobs and boost the struggling local economy.

However, mining expert Ingrid Watson, a senior lecturer at the Wits Mining Institute, cautions that the chances of reinstating the mine are minimal due to financial and safety constraints.

IOL News visited Khuma to hear directly from residents. Many acknowledged the economic benefits illegal miners, known as zama zamas, bring to local businesses.

Taxi drivers profit from transporting miners, while small business owners—such as tavern operators and shopkeepers—have seen a sharp decline in income since illegal mining activity slowed down.

Despite these economic benefits, the community remains deeply concerned about crime. A resident, who did not want to be named, said they disliked the fact that zama zamas bring their conflicts to the township.

“They fight over territory, use firearms, and our children are terrified,” the resident said

Trio sentenced for murder of police officer in North West

The Ventersdorp Magistrates' Court has sentenced three men for their involvement in the murder of Warrant Officer Gaonathebe Diphephenyane, who was attached to Kimberley Crime Scene Investigation (CSI).

Tshepo Sthembiso Molaba (33), Thabiso Gladwin Phendela (30), and John Elvis Hlongwane (30) were found guilty on charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances, defeating the administration of justice, and murder of a police official.

Molaba received a 10-year sentence for robbery with aggravating circumstances, while Phendela was sentenced to four years for defeating the administration of justice.

Hlongwane, who was found guilty of murdering Warrant Officer Diphephenyane, was sentenced to 12 years behind bars. Additionally, all three accused were declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Murder and Investigation

The case dates back to July 2023, when Warrant Officer Diphephenyane was travelling from Kimberley to Rustenburg on an official assignment.

He was hijacked in Klerkskraal, North West, and robbed of his state vehicle, cellphone, and money. Tragically, his lifeless body—showing signs of strangulation—was later discovered dumped beside a road in Klerkskraal.

A multidisciplinary task team consisting of the Hawks' Serious Organised Crime Investigation, Tactical Operations Management Section, Crime Intelligence, and provincial detectives from North West and Northern Cape, among others, was assembled to track down the suspects.

Investigations led authorities to Boikhutsong in Ventersdorp, Vosloorus, and Brakpan in Gauteng, where the trio was arrested. They remained in custody until their sentencing.

Brigadier Silas Munzhedzi, the acting North West Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, and Dr Rachel Makhari, Director of Public Prosecutions in North West, commended the dedication of the investigation and prosecution teams.

"This verdict is a testament to the relentless efforts of our law enforcement agencies. The successful conviction and sentencing send a strong message that crimes against police officials will not go unpunished," said Brigadier Munzhedzi.

Three Mozambique nationals sentenced for copper cable theft in Tlhabane

Tlhabane Regional Court in the North West has handed down lengthy prison sentences to three Mozambican nationals for theft of copper cables and violating immigration laws. The trio – Andries Chilenge (43), Oscar Tembe (33), and Julius Khoza (46) – received sentences ranging from 13 to 23 years.

The case stems from an incident on November 11, 2023, near Boshoek and the Phokeng railway. The men were caught stealing a 353kg copper railway cable valued at over R146,000. The theft was discovered around 11 p.m. by transit security personnel who found the severed cable during routine patrols.

A swift search operation using a drone and security team led to the suspects' capture near the railway. Police confiscated the stolen cable at the scene.

During the trial, a Transnet investigator testified about the severe consequences of tampering with essential infrastructure, highlighting the disruptions to freight transportation and significant financial losses.

State Prosecutor Mputla urged the court to impose strict penalties, stressing the gravity of the crime.

The court agreed, with the presiding officer noting that the men's actions endangered the community. The sentences are as follows:

Andries Chilenge: 18 years for theft and 1 year for contravening the Immigration Act.

Oscar Tembe: 13 years for theft and 1 year for contravening the Immigration Act.

Julius Khoza: 23 years for theft and 1 year for contravening the Immigration Act.

The court ordered that the sentences for violating the Immigration Act run concurrently with the theft sentences. After serving their terms, the men will be deported to Mozambique.

Dr Rachel Makhari, the Director of Public Prosecutions in the North West, lauded the conviction and commended all involved parties. "These sentences demonstrate the National Prosecuting Authority's commitment to fighting crime and delivering justice," she said.

SA caught in the middle of DRC conflict

The three SANDF members who died on Monday lost their lives after being caught in a crossfire between DRC army and M23 rebels in the heart of Goma region, where the conflict has claimed the lives of 13 South African troops.

The full details of how the soldiers died emerged on Wednesday during a media briefing by minister of defence Angie Motshekga, who said the government was monitoring the situation every two hours to assess any necessary interventions.

The Monday attack was preceded by the killing of nine SANDF members who were engaged in combat with M23 rebels on Friday.

"Unfortunately, DRC forces were fighting Rwandan forces over our heads, which led to the tragic loss of three of our soldiers. We had to immediately communicate with M23, clarifying that we were not part of the battle. This led to an agreement where we hoisted the white flag to signify our neutrality and allow M23 a safe passage to retrieve their deceased," she said.

“To be clear, we did not surrender ... surrendering would require us to formally report to UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) and hand over our weapons. The white flag was solely for humanitarian purposes, ensuring safe passage for recovering the deceased and signaling that we were not combatants in this battle."

According deputy minister of defence Bantu Holomisa, the SA soldiers were left exposed to the full fury of war after their allies from DRC and Burundi retreated, leaving them vulnerable.

“It is clear that our troops were let down by other forces in the region. The Congolese troops surrendered, and the Burundian troops – who were supposed to cover another flank – also withdrew. As a result, our South African troops were left exposed and ended up being attacked by mortars and other weapons. However, their response was swift, and they reacted with remarkable speed," he said.

The news of the killing of SA soldiers in the DRC has sparked outrage as citizens and opposition parties  demand answers about the conditions there, with some calling for withdrawal from the UN-led  peacekeeping mission. The deaths of soldiers have heightened concerns about underfunding of the SANDF and its readiness, with suggestions that the troops were ill-equipped.

I’ve also heard claims that our soldiers ran out of food... this is untrue.
Angie Motshekga, minister of defence

The EFF said by Friday last week, the party had already receive reports that the SANDF had run out of ammunition.

However, Motshekga yesterday said she had not been told of any shortages.

“On the first day, the commander informed me that they fought throughout the night. Initially, our troops were deployed for peacekeeping, but being caught in the crossfire required additional resources. That’s why we reinforced.

"I’ve also heard claims that our soldiers ran out of food...this is untrue. When I visited our logistics centre in Goma, none of the generals told me that they had run out of food. We reinforced because of the increasing intensity of the situation," she said.

Holomisa said by Thursday last week, the SA troops were running low on ammunition and requested reinforcements. "The ammunition was dispatched, and by Saturday evening, it had arrived in eastern Goma,” he said.

The war in DRC is between Congolese troops against the M23 rebels supported by Rwandan forces. SANDF is part of a group of about 10 peacekeeping forces from different countries.

President Cyril Ramaphosa said shooting at peacekeepers may constitute war crimes. He further said the government is in the process of repatriating the 13 bodies of South African soldiers.

Motshekga said Ramaphosa and other regional leaders are working to bring all affected parties—Rwanda, Angola, Tanzania, and neighboring countries—together to resolve the crisis through diplomatic means.

Process to repatriate 13 fallen soldiers in DRC on course – Ramaphosa
President Cyril Ramaphosa says the process of repatriating the 13 soldiers who died on a mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is underway.

Illegal mining is war on economy: Mantashe

Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources Gwede Mantashe says illegal mining is a war on the economy.

He was speaking during a media briefing in Pretoria, on the Mines Health and Safety statistics for 2024.

Over 1 900 illegal miners were retrieved from a disused mine in Stilfontein in the North West in the past weeks.

This after the SAPS launched its crackdown operation, Vala Umgodi at the mine in August last year.

Mantashe says illegal mining still remains a criminal activity.

“There can be no two ways about it, it is criminals attacking the economy. Precious metals illicit trade is estimated in 2024 to about R60-billion. That R60-billion is a leakage on the value of the economy of the country. It’s a serious criminal activity and we support operation Vala Umgodi.”

Home Affairs aims at working with banks to offer ID & passport servic9

Home affairs Minister Leon Schreiber says that he aims to dramatically expand his department’s partnership with South African banks this year and increase the number of branches offering smart IDs and passports.

Speaking with Izak du Plessis on Nuuspod, Schreiber said that for almost a decade the partnership has been limited to around 30 bank branches around the country.

“This must become hundreds if not thousands of bank branches. I want every village, town, city, and suburb in South Africa to have access to Home Affairs services in a local bank branch,” said Schreiber.

“I believe this will reduce the pressure on our offices and alleviate the long queues. Not to mention greatly expanding our footprint.”

Schreiber said another goal for 2025 is for documents to introduce a delivery option for documents.

“It is already accepted practice that if you order a new bank card, it gets delivered to your home or office for a fee,” he said.

In addition to making Home Affairs’ services more convenient to access, Schreiber said he wanted to use technology to further combat fraud and identity theft.

Schreiber said any process that allows or requires human intervention opens the door for fraud.

“It is only possible for someone to steal an ID number or engage in fraudulent activity like swopping out photos because the system has gaps that allow for human intervention,” he previously told the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs.

“Until such time as Home Affairs has been transformed into a digital-first department, these abuses will keep happening.”

“Instances like these — and potentially much worse — will keep happening for as long as Home Affairs processes are manual, paper-based, and vulnerable to human discretion,” he added.

He also said that digitally transforming Home Affairs has been accompanied by cracking down on individuals perpetrating fraud in the department.

Schreiber said there had been dozens of disciplinary cases and arrests in the past year, ensuring that people there are consequences for defrauding the system.

IRR calls for re-adjustments to save jobs

The Institute of Race Relations (IRR) has called on the National Minimum Wage Commission to re-adjust the current figure to save jobs.

The national minimum wage stands at R27.58.

The IRR says the increase has led to a staggering 230 000 job losses in 2024 alone. The institute says this is too high.

IRR Legal Executive Director, Gabriel Crouse says, “In other countries, they know that the minimum wage is destroying jobs, but they think it’s worth it because they’ve only got two or three or four percent unemployment, and they’re more interested in those who keep their jobs getting a raise.”

“But here, with unemployment being officially above 30% and with all the polling by the Institute of Race Relations pointing to that being the biggest problem, we say we need to prioritise the poor work seekers who are being excluded from the job market and those who just had jobs, who are just starting to get that work experience to grow. We need to focus our attention on them and do what we can to help them, which means relaxing the minimum wage requirements.”

Ramaphosa calls for global solidarity as SA stresses G20 presidency

South Africa has had the opportunity to brief world leaders at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland about the country’s G20 presidency.

President Cyril Ramaphosa was briefing the media after he wrapped up his participation at the WEF. He says more solidarity is required in the world in order to advance the interests of ordinary people.

Ramaphosa outlines the key points from that briefing. “Our objectives with regards to the theme of the G20 in South Africa in Johannesburg this year and also the priorities that we are going to focus on. We stressed that we are going to be having three themes: solidarity, equality and sustainable development. These are themes that we would like the G20 to add a lot of substance to, in terms of enhancing cooperation in the world and building consensus as we advance the interests of ordinary people.”

‘Successful and productive’

The President has hailed his trip as successful and productive.

Team South Africa didn’t have to answer hard questions on energy generation this time around as the country has been able to address the challenges of electricity supply.

During his interaction with the media, the President outlined the importance of South Africa at this year’s meeting as it comes in a year Johannesburg will be hosting the G20 leaders meeting later this year.

South Africa will then hand over to America as the incoming president of the G20.

Eskom turnaround

President Ramaphosa, who has wrapped up his participation in Davos, says the turnaround of Eskom has increased confidence in the country.

The country has just surpassed 300 days without load shedding. “We’ve been able to stabilise our energy generation as well as transmission and this has led to increased confidence with the business community here because that is the one issue they kept raising with us that, solve the energy problem and then you will see more and more investments flowing into your country.”

Through this programme, the stakeholders seek to resuscitate and rebuild the fortunes of football within the region by assembling former football players and taking them through proper channels and understanding football administration, which amongst others include rules, statutes, regulations and constitutions of SAFA and the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA). District Municipality Mayor said, they will provide full support where it can to the structure

"The centre of this structure hinges on supporting social cohesion, which is the cornerstone of community upliftment through sport development. And whilst the District Municipality will provide full support where it can to the structure, the responsibility is bestowed upon the leadership of this forum as we believe it has the ability to develop football in the district. This indeed is the beginning of a protracted journey of extricating young people from acts of crime and drug abuse which they are deeply immersed" - Dr Kennth Kaunda Executive Mayor Nikiwe Num

Executive Mayor also said, this presents a bright future for the youth of this district and a vision must be there even in their absence

"To the legends and masters, your thinking and knowledge, coupled together with government’s willingness to break all barriers to assist presents a positive narrative leading to effective operation of this structure. It also presents a bright future for the youth of this district. What we are planting as a seed, we may not see it in our lifetime, but we need to be able to do something. As a start, the vision must be there even if we are not there so that those who come behind are able to advance it further in our absence" -  Executive Mayor, Nikiwe Num
