On this week's health feature, we give focus on strokes & heart disease, we want to understand the difference and how you can prevent them. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death – and it affects younger people too. On this week's feature, we also learn about the direct impact as well risks stroke & heart diseases pose on human health
How many times does a heart pump blood daily??
A heart pumps life-sustaining blood throughout the body 100,000 times daily via a 97,000-kilometre-long network of vessels. However, this mighty organ increasingly needs protection against two common disorders – heart attacks and strokes.
Categorised as cardiovascular diseases, heart attacks, and strokes are a group of disorders of the heart and blood vessels. In the case of a heart attack, the blood flow to your heart is suddenly blocked. In comparison, a stroke occurs when there is a sudden interruption of blood flow to your brain.
Both events are considered medical emergencies, which, if left untreated or unchecked, can lead to disability or death. In fact, more than 85% of deaths globally are attributed to heart attacks and strokes, according to the World Health Organisation.
Heart attacks are common amongst young people too
While it used to be rare for anyone younger than 40 to have a heart attack, according to a report by McLeod Health, fast-forward to now, 1 in 5 heart attack patients are younger than 40 years of age, and it gets worse. Having a heart attack in your 20s or early 30s has become more common. Furthermore, between the years 2000-2016, the heart attack rate increased by 2% every year in this young age group.
Symptoms of a heart attack include:
Pain or discomfort in the centre of the chest. Pain or discomfort in the arms, the left shoulder, elbows, jaw, or back. You may have trouble breathing, shortness of breath, nausea or vomiting, light-headedness or faintness, a cold sweat, and turning pale. Women are more likely than men to have shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, and back or jaw pain.
Symptoms of a stroke include the sudden onset of:
A powerful headachenumbness of the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body; confusion, difficulty in speaking or understanding speech; difficulty in seeing with one or both eyes; difficulty in walking, dizziness or loss of balance or coordination; severe headaches with no known cause or fainting or unconsciousness.
If you suspect that someone may be having a stroke or heart attack, call for medical help immediately.
Prevention is better than cure
The good news is that most cardiovascular diseases can be prevented by addressing behavioural and environmental risk factors, such as:
Tobacco use, unhealthy diet and obesity physical inactivity, harmful use of alcohol or air pollution
It is, therefore, crucial to detect cardiovascular disease as early as possible so that effective management with counselling and medication can begin. If you are young, whether male or female, do not let the misconception that heart attacks only happen to the elderly stand in the way of seeking treatment. Symptoms such as chest pain and shortness of breath should always be taken seriously.

Khuma residents call for reopening & legalisation of abandoned mine
Residents of Khuma, a township in Stilfontein, have called on the government to reopen and legalise an abandoned mining site that has become a hotspot for illegal mining and violence.
They believe reviving the mine could create jobs and boost the struggling local economy.
However, mining expert Ingrid Watson, a senior lecturer at the Wits Mining Institute, cautions that the chances of reinstating the mine are minimal due to financial and safety constraints.
IOL News visited Khuma to hear directly from residents. Many acknowledged the economic benefits illegal miners, known as zama zamas, bring to local businesses.
Taxi drivers profit from transporting miners, while small business owners—such as tavern operators and shopkeepers—have seen a sharp decline in income since illegal mining activity slowed down.
Despite these economic benefits, the community remains deeply concerned about crime. A resident, who did not want to be named, said they disliked the fact that zama zamas bring their conflicts to the township.
“They fight over territory, use firearms, and our children are terrified,” the resident said

Trio sentenced for murder of police officer in North West
The Ventersdorp Magistrates' Court has sentenced three men for their involvement in the murder of Warrant Officer Gaonathebe Diphephenyane, who was attached to Kimberley Crime Scene Investigation (CSI).
Tshepo Sthembiso Molaba (33), Thabiso Gladwin Phendela (30), and John Elvis Hlongwane (30) were found guilty on charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances, defeating the administration of justice, and murder of a police official.
Molaba received a 10-year sentence for robbery with aggravating circumstances, while Phendela was sentenced to four years for defeating the administration of justice.
Hlongwane, who was found guilty of murdering Warrant Officer Diphephenyane, was sentenced to 12 years behind bars. Additionally, all three accused were declared unfit to possess a firearm.
Murder and Investigation
The case dates back to July 2023, when Warrant Officer Diphephenyane was travelling from Kimberley to Rustenburg on an official assignment.
He was hijacked in Klerkskraal, North West, and robbed of his state vehicle, cellphone, and money. Tragically, his lifeless body—showing signs of strangulation—was later discovered dumped beside a road in Klerkskraal.
A multidisciplinary task team consisting of the Hawks' Serious Organised Crime Investigation, Tactical Operations Management Section, Crime Intelligence, and provincial detectives from North West and Northern Cape, among others, was assembled to track down the suspects.
Investigations led authorities to Boikhutsong in Ventersdorp, Vosloorus, and Brakpan in Gauteng, where the trio was arrested. They remained in custody until their sentencing.
Brigadier Silas Munzhedzi, the acting North West Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, and Dr Rachel Makhari, Director of Public Prosecutions in North West, commended the dedication of the investigation and prosecution teams.
"This verdict is a testament to the relentless efforts of our law enforcement agencies. The successful conviction and sentencing send a strong message that crimes against police officials will not go unpunished," said Brigadier Munzhedzi.

Three Mozambique nationals sentenced for copper cable theft in Tlhabane
Tlhabane Regional Court in the North West has handed down lengthy prison sentences to three Mozambican nationals for theft of copper cables and violating immigration laws. The trio – Andries Chilenge (43), Oscar Tembe (33), and Julius Khoza (46) – received sentences ranging from 13 to 23 years.
The case stems from an incident on November 11, 2023, near Boshoek and the Phokeng railway. The men were caught stealing a 353kg copper railway cable valued at over R146,000. The theft was discovered around 11 p.m. by transit security personnel who found the severed cable during routine patrols.
A swift search operation using a drone and security team led to the suspects' capture near the railway. Police confiscated the stolen cable at the scene.
During the trial, a Transnet investigator testified about the severe consequences of tampering with essential infrastructure, highlighting the disruptions to freight transportation and significant financial losses.
State Prosecutor Mputla urged the court to impose strict penalties, stressing the gravity of the crime.
The court agreed, with the presiding officer noting that the men's actions endangered the community. The sentences are as follows:
Andries Chilenge: 18 years for theft and 1 year for contravening the Immigration Act.
Oscar Tembe: 13 years for theft and 1 year for contravening the Immigration Act.
Julius Khoza: 23 years for theft and 1 year for contravening the Immigration Act.
The court ordered that the sentences for violating the Immigration Act run concurrently with the theft sentences. After serving their terms, the men will be deported to Mozambique.
Dr Rachel Makhari, the Director of Public Prosecutions in the North West, lauded the conviction and commended all involved parties. "These sentences demonstrate the National Prosecuting Authority's commitment to fighting crime and delivering justice," she said.

SA caught in the middle of DRC conflict
The three SANDF members who died on Monday lost their lives after being caught in a crossfire between DRC army and M23 rebels in the heart of Goma region, where the conflict has claimed the lives of 13 South African troops.
The full details of how the soldiers died emerged on Wednesday during a media briefing by minister of defence Angie Motshekga, who said the government was monitoring the situation every two hours to assess any necessary interventions.
The Monday attack was preceded by the killing of nine SANDF members who were engaged in combat with M23 rebels on Friday.
"Unfortunately, DRC forces were fighting Rwandan forces over our heads, which led to the tragic loss of three of our soldiers. We had to immediately communicate with M23, clarifying that we were not part of the battle. This led to an agreement where we hoisted the white flag to signify our neutrality and allow M23 a safe passage to retrieve their deceased," she said.
“To be clear, we did not surrender ... surrendering would require us to formally report to UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) and hand over our weapons. The white flag was solely for humanitarian purposes, ensuring safe passage for recovering the deceased and signaling that we were not combatants in this battle."
According deputy minister of defence Bantu Holomisa, the SA soldiers were left exposed to the full fury of war after their allies from DRC and Burundi retreated, leaving them vulnerable.
“It is clear that our troops were let down by other forces in the region. The Congolese troops surrendered, and the Burundian troops – who were supposed to cover another flank – also withdrew. As a result, our South African troops were left exposed and ended up being attacked by mortars and other weapons. However, their response was swift, and they reacted with remarkable speed," he said.
The news of the killing of SA soldiers in the DRC has sparked outrage as citizens and opposition parties demand answers about the conditions there, with some calling for withdrawal from the UN-led peacekeeping mission. The deaths of soldiers have heightened concerns about underfunding of the SANDF and its readiness, with suggestions that the troops were ill-equipped.
I’ve also heard claims that our soldiers ran out of food... this is untrue.
Angie Motshekga, minister of defence
The EFF said by Friday last week, the party had already receive reports that the SANDF had run out of ammunition.
However, Motshekga yesterday said she had not been told of any shortages.
“On the first day, the commander informed me that they fought throughout the night. Initially, our troops were deployed for peacekeeping, but being caught in the crossfire required additional resources. That’s why we reinforced.
"I’ve also heard claims that our soldiers ran out of food...this is untrue. When I visited our logistics centre in Goma, none of the generals told me that they had run out of food. We reinforced because of the increasing intensity of the situation," she said.
Holomisa said by Thursday last week, the SA troops were running low on ammunition and requested reinforcements. "The ammunition was dispatched, and by Saturday evening, it had arrived in eastern Goma,” he said.
The war in DRC is between Congolese troops against the M23 rebels supported by Rwandan forces. SANDF is part of a group of about 10 peacekeeping forces from different countries.
President Cyril Ramaphosa said shooting at peacekeepers may constitute war crimes. He further said the government is in the process of repatriating the 13 bodies of South African soldiers.
Motshekga said Ramaphosa and other regional leaders are working to bring all affected parties—Rwanda, Angola, Tanzania, and neighboring countries—together to resolve the crisis through diplomatic means.
Process to repatriate 13 fallen soldiers in DRC on course – Ramaphosa
President Cyril Ramaphosa says the process of repatriating the 13 soldiers who died on a mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is underway.

Illegal mining is war on economy: Mantashe
Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources Gwede Mantashe says illegal mining is a war on the economy.
He was speaking during a media briefing in Pretoria, on the Mines Health and Safety statistics for 2024.
Over 1 900 illegal miners were retrieved from a disused mine in Stilfontein in the North West in the past weeks.
This after the SAPS launched its crackdown operation, Vala Umgodi at the mine in August last year.
Mantashe says illegal mining still remains a criminal activity.
“There can be no two ways about it, it is criminals attacking the economy. Precious metals illicit trade is estimated in 2024 to about R60-billion. That R60-billion is a leakage on the value of the economy of the country. It’s a serious criminal activity and we support operation Vala Umgodi.”

Home Affairs aims at working with banks to offer ID & passport servic9
Home affairs Minister Leon Schreiber says that he aims to dramatically expand his department’s partnership with South African banks this year and increase the number of branches offering smart IDs and passports.
Speaking with Izak du Plessis on Nuuspod, Schreiber said that for almost a decade the partnership has been limited to around 30 bank branches around the country.
“This must become hundreds if not thousands of bank branches. I want every village, town, city, and suburb in South Africa to have access to Home Affairs services in a local bank branch,” said Schreiber.
“I believe this will reduce the pressure on our offices and alleviate the long queues. Not to mention greatly expanding our footprint.”
Schreiber said another goal for 2025 is for documents to introduce a delivery option for documents.
“It is already accepted practice that if you order a new bank card, it gets delivered to your home or office for a fee,” he said.
In addition to making Home Affairs’ services more convenient to access, Schreiber said he wanted to use technology to further combat fraud and identity theft.
Schreiber said any process that allows or requires human intervention opens the door for fraud.
“It is only possible for someone to steal an ID number or engage in fraudulent activity like swopping out photos because the system has gaps that allow for human intervention,” he previously told the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs.
“Until such time as Home Affairs has been transformed into a digital-first department, these abuses will keep happening.”
“Instances like these — and potentially much worse — will keep happening for as long as Home Affairs processes are manual, paper-based, and vulnerable to human discretion,” he added.
He also said that digitally transforming Home Affairs has been accompanied by cracking down on individuals perpetrating fraud in the department.
Schreiber said there had been dozens of disciplinary cases and arrests in the past year, ensuring that people there are consequences for defrauding the system.

IRR calls for re-adjustments to save jobs
The Institute of Race Relations (IRR) has called on the National Minimum Wage Commission to re-adjust the current figure to save jobs.
The national minimum wage stands at R27.58.
The IRR says the increase has led to a staggering 230 000 job losses in 2024 alone. The institute says this is too high.
IRR Legal Executive Director, Gabriel Crouse says, “In other countries, they know that the minimum wage is destroying jobs, but they think it’s worth it because they’ve only got two or three or four percent unemployment, and they’re more interested in those who keep their jobs getting a raise.”
“But here, with unemployment being officially above 30% and with all the polling by the Institute of Race Relations pointing to that being the biggest problem, we say we need to prioritise the poor work seekers who are being excluded from the job market and those who just had jobs, who are just starting to get that work experience to grow. We need to focus our attention on them and do what we can to help them, which means relaxing the minimum wage requirements.”
Ramaphosa calls for global solidarity as SA stresses G20 presidency
South Africa has had the opportunity to brief world leaders at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland about the country’s G20 presidency.
President Cyril Ramaphosa was briefing the media after he wrapped up his participation at the WEF. He says more solidarity is required in the world in order to advance the interests of ordinary people.
Ramaphosa outlines the key points from that briefing. “Our objectives with regards to the theme of the G20 in South Africa in Johannesburg this year and also the priorities that we are going to focus on. We stressed that we are going to be having three themes: solidarity, equality and sustainable development. These are themes that we would like the G20 to add a lot of substance to, in terms of enhancing cooperation in the world and building consensus as we advance the interests of ordinary people.”
‘Successful and productive’
The President has hailed his trip as successful and productive.
Team South Africa didn’t have to answer hard questions on energy generation this time around as the country has been able to address the challenges of electricity supply.
During his interaction with the media, the President outlined the importance of South Africa at this year’s meeting as it comes in a year Johannesburg will be hosting the G20 leaders meeting later this year.
South Africa will then hand over to America as the incoming president of the G20.
Eskom turnaround
President Ramaphosa, who has wrapped up his participation in Davos, says the turnaround of Eskom has increased confidence in the country.
The country has just surpassed 300 days without load shedding. “We’ve been able to stabilise our energy generation as well as transmission and this has led to increased confidence with the business community here because that is the one issue they kept raising with us that, solve the energy problem and then you will see more and more investments flowing into your country.”
