Simon Kesetsi Molale (21) from Lokgabeng Village has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Taung Regional Court for the premeditated murder of his partner, Rethabile Medichane (21).
The incident occurred on 12 August 2024, after the couple had attended a function at Molale’s aunt’s home. On their way back, Medichane reportedly told Molale that she wanted to end their relationship. Enraged, Molale went to a nearby house, borrowed a knife, and stabbed her 22 times before fleeing the scene.
He was later arrested and denied bail. During the trial, he pleaded guilty to the charge.
In aggravating arguments, State Prosecutor Rebaona Mokgopa presented a Victim Impact Statement from the deceased’s mother, facilitated by Court Preparation Officer Molebogeng Oliphant, detailing the emotional devastation caused by the crime. Mokgopa urged the court to impose a harsh sentence in light of South Africa’s ongoing battle with gender-based violence.
Magistrate Bhuti Zulu found no compelling reasons for a lighter sentence and imposed life imprisonment.
