Tswelelang residents rush to register for new RDP stands in the Ext 18

Tswelelang - Following calls on social media, Tswelelang residents are rushing to register for new stands and are already building shacks on the plots they are placed

According to reports, over 3 500 people are needed to be placed on those stands. It has  been reported that those stands offered to people in need of them are already registered to other people

In 2025, The Maquassi Hills Municipality Housing Department urged RDP and stand recipients to locate into their respective stands

The department warned RDP  applicants who are currently not in their allocated stands to immediately move in to allow process of allocation to proceed without disturbances

The warning came after there were rumours that empty stands will be allocated to  residents who are in need of stands

The Housing Department within the municipality refuted these claims after reviewing it's decision to allocate residents who are in need of stands

The department held engagements with the Ext 17 and 18 residents in late June 2025 to clear the air amid escalating rumours that caused panic amongst the residents

The department said, a list of stand applicants will be reviewed as to who is an legal recipient of a stand that has been allocated to them

Residents who are legal recipients of stands were urged to head to Maquassi Hills Municipal Offices and provide proof of allocation or proof of residence. This was to curb the misunderstanding of removing legal owners of stands after rumours that spread amongst residents

The Housing Department also highlighted that, Eskom made a plea that residents who are legal applicants of RDP houses and stands to remain in their stands by building shacks in order to begin a process of eracting electrical connection/network very soon

Engagements with Eskom have been made to see when can these electrical connection be implemented

In a report, the housing department said, incomplete RDP houses in the Ext 17 and 18 were due to budget shortage which prompted contractors to halt housing constructions, it is not clear how did these shortages come about, however, it has been said, the new budget for constructing the Ext 17 and 18 RDP houses has been allocated and construction is yet to continue

The question of the construction of RDP houses in the Ext 19 has been left unanswered due to rising confusion

Residents were given until the 30th of June 2025 to visit Maquassi Hills municipal offices for further assistance and clarity
