A Tswelelang-based Community Activist, Kagiso Sejamoholo Phutiage has called on the youth of Maquassi Hills to march against high unemployment rate and water
He urged the affected to stand for service delivery that should be offered by the local government
Phutiage said, it has been years without water. Extension 17, 13, and 15 have been the most affected with dry taps, meanwhile in Makwassie and Leeudoringstad areas have also been affected by dry taps. Phutiage reaffirmed that every community member in Maquassi Hills is affected
"Maquassi Hills Youth: Enough is Enough — Let's organize a BIG protest against water crisis and high rate of unemployment. Let us stand and show bravery for visible services from local government. Truly, we are youth that is suffering. It is time we stand on our feet" - Kagiso Sejamoholo Phutiage, Community Activist
Phutiage says, high unemployment rate is the leader in the increasing rate of crime
"The youth of Maquassi Hills better stand up against unemployment crisis in the area that is leading to high rate of crime. North West Province is topping the province with unemployment statics. If this problem is not given better attention within 14 days we are going to the street to fight. Enough is enough, government money is misused in our watch. We have turned into sheeps slaughtered while we reside quietly. We won't be silenced this time around, we are more than prepared to be taken to jail if it means fighting for the right cause" - Kagiso Sejamoholo Phutiage, Community Activist
Phutiage also said Regulation of Gatherings Act will be adhered to during the planned march and the police will be notified atleast before 7 days of the march and no damage may be done
"We will adhere to the Regulation of Gatherings Act 205 of 1993. Section 3 requires that we notify SAPS at least 7 days before we gather. Section 4 says SAPS must meet with us to discuss the route. Section 8 says we must be peaceful and unarmed. Section 11 says if we follow the law, we are not liable for random damage. SAPS cannot say “no” to a lawful protest. Only a court can issue an interdict. Any officer who blocks a lawful protest is denying a constitutional right and that decision can be challenged in court" - Kagiso Sejamoholo Phutiage, Community Activist
The Maquassi Hills Municipality has been providing water through water tankering for months which some residents seem not to praise
Phutiage says, water tankering is not sufficient
"The Water Services Act 108 of 1997, Section 3, repeats the same: Everyone has a right of access to basic water supply. Section 4 says the municipality must provide water services efficiently and equitably. Tankering is not efficient.Tankering is an admission of failure. Who do we blame when the law is clear and the taps are empty? Municipality and government and corruption" - Kagiso Sejamoholo Phutiage, Community Activist
Phutiage says, he is engaging with various stake holders to organise a march which will voice their concerns very soon
