GBV cases identified in Maquassi Hills in the last 12 months shows substance abuse was the cause

Leeudoringstad, Kgakala -
Substance abuse in Maquassi Hills has been identified as the source that fuels Gender-Based Violence  cases in various areas. The communities in the municipality have identified these cases as concerning during the Anti-Crime and Violence community engagement at Chris Hani Community Hall recently

Amongst reported cases in the last 12 months for Leeudoringstad, Makwassie and Wolmaranstad include sexual offences, attempted murder, common assault, robbery theft and cable theft

Speaking on behalf of the Community Safety and Transport Management, MEC Wessels Morweng, the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality Executive Mayor, Cllr Nikiwe Num encouraged communities to report criminal cases and work closely with the police

“We know who the criminals are because they come from the communities within which we live. We will never defeat the demons of criminality until we all work tougher as South Africans and stop harbouring those that hurt the society simply because we are related to them. It cannot be correct for families to want to negotiate and say for the sake of the family, we must protect someone who we know abuses the family and is a known criminal,"  Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Executive Mayor Nikiwe Num

The District CPF Chairperson has urged community members to refrain from engaging in criminal activities and encouraged them to actively participate in crime-fighting initiatives by joining local CPF and Community in Blue structures

Residents also raised concerns of alcohol establishments which sells alcohol to underaged persons, calling for a close monitoring. Concerned residents said, late-night partying has led to these young adults committing offences that include rape, stabbing, murder and assault

Police officials who attended the community event, promised to have a look at the matters community members have raised and report back on achievements
