Maquassi Hills residents call for close monitoring of shebeens and tarvens

Maquassi Hills residents says, alcohol and drug abuse amongst young persons are a cause of crime, murders and Gender-Based Violence, prompting a call for a close monitoring of shebeens and tarvens

Residents highlighted these issues during the Anti-Crime and Violence Imbizo that was held in Tswelelang Community Hall. The imbizo was collaborated with North West Provincial Police, Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Police Management, Community Safety Department

The purpose of the engagement was to listen to concerns raised by the Tswelelang community and to address issues relating to crime and service delivery

Residents said, the high rise in alcohol abuse amongst young persons has fuelled Gender-Based Violence, rape and murders. These community from various vantage points of Maquassi Hills which included Leeudoringstad, Makwassie and Boskuil said, some of the alcohol establishments within the Maquassi Hills sub-district also sells alcohol to underage people calling for monitoring of these alcohol-selling spots

The community also raised concerns over late-night closing shebeens and tarvens which hinders with their personal lives and that of their children who are at schools and are studying, residents alleged that, some of these alcohol establishments are at some point operating even in mid-week where noise pollution gets very much frustrating

The Acting District Commander, Brigadier Juma, outlined the crime statistics for Wolmaransstad, Leeudoringstad, and Makwassie areas respectively, emphasising the importance of strengthening collaboration between government departments and the community in the fight against crime

The community welcomed the platform to engage directly with stakeholders. Community members raised various concerns and expressed dissatisfaction regarding the quality of services received from different departments, including those not present at the Imbizo

Brigadier Juma further presented detailed crime trends in the area, while Brigadier Molate responded to SAPS-related matters and urged the community to work closely with the police. She also encouraged community structures such as the CPF and Neighbourhood Watches to operate within the confines of the law and adhere to established protocols while supporting crime prevention initiatives. Representatives from various departments also responded to issues raised

The District CPF Chairperson, Dr KK, urged community members to refrain from engaging in criminal activities and encouraged them to actively participate in crime-fighting initiatives by joining local CPF and Community in Blue structures

Newborn baby found alive at a dumping site in Wolmaransstad in a plastic bag

The South African Police Service and emergency services responded on Saturday morning (16 August 2026) to a report of a newborn baby found at a dumping site put inside a black plastic bag in Wolmaransstad According to initial reports, a member of the public discovered the baby boy at the site earlier on Saturday. Emergency medical personnel were immediately called to the scene The infant was found to be alive and was stabilized on site before being transported to a nearby hospital for further medical checkups and care. The community of Maquassi Hills have shutdown offices of Sports, Arts and Culture in Wolmaransstad over being excluded from the department's budget The community vowed to have the offices closed for as long as necessary if the office of the MEC responsible for the portfolio does not come to address their concerns Concerned community members, delivered their memorandum of concerns to the offices in Wolmaransstad.
