NW women defy odds at Ariel Arts Rustenburg

Ever dreamt of flying - At Aerial Arts Rustenburg, that dream is within reach — literally. Combining fitness, grace, and gravity-defying fun, this unique studio is helping women and children take their health to new heights through aerial silk, hoop (lyra), and yoga.

Founded and led by the dynamic Jennifer Mendes, a qualified personal trainer with over 20 years of experience, Aerial Arts Rustenburg offers a safe, empowering space where students can build strength, balance, and self-confidence.

“Teaching aerial is about more than just the technique,” says Mendes. “It’s about empowering individuals to fly. My role is not just to teach skills — it’s to inspire confidence and ignite passion.”

Classes are held every afternoon on the grounds of Selly Park High School, and the first session is completely free. “We cater to ladies and children, with classes starting from age five,” Jennifer adds. “It’s women-only — for comfort and community — and we have such a supportive environment that anyone will feel welcome.”

Aerial silk is a form of aerial fitness where participants perform poses and routines while suspended in long, flowing fabric. “It’s a fantastic workout that strengthens the upper body, improves balance, and enhances the connection between mind and body,” Jennifer explains. “Plus, it’s an incredible amount of fun.”

For Stacey Jackson, one of Jennifer’s students, the experience has been life-changing. “I first joined one of Jennifer’s fitness classes just to try it out,” says Stacey. “I hated working out before, but this ignited a passion in me to become a better version of myself. Now I do all her classes!”

Besides aerial silk, the studio also offers aerial hoop, pole fitness for women, and yoga classes focusing on flexibility, mindfulness, and strength. Whether you’re a fitness fanatic or just someone looking to try something new and exhilarating, Aerial Arts Rustenburg offers a unique, uplifting way to get active.

“If you want to work out, find something fun that you love,” Jennifer advises. “Running on a treadmill isn’t for everyone. Aerial arts is exciting and empowering — and the community here makes it even more special.”
