Gordon Sibanda saw court after a find of illegal cigarettes in Leeudoringstad

Leeudoringstad -  A 42-year-old Zimbabwean national, Gordon Sibanda, has appeared before the Leeudoringstad Periodical Court for a bail application, following his initial appearance at the Wolmaransstad Magistrate’s Court

Sibanda was arrested on Monday, 2nd June 2025, after police intercepted and searched a truck he was driving on the Leeudoringstad/Orkney road

Officers discovered 169 boxes of illicit Chief and Remington cigarettes, with an estimated street value of R850 000. The suspect was arrested on the spot, and the truck along with the illicit cargo was confiscated by authorities

He faces a charge of illegal possession of illicit cigarettes. The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the North West, Major General Patrick Asaneng, commended the arrest, calling it a significant breakthrough in the province’s fight against the illicit economy, which undermines legal trade, evades taxes

“It is alarming that the accused and the contraband managed to travel such a distance from the Port of Entry without being detected” -  Major General Asaneng

“This raises serious questions about border control procedures. The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) must thoroughly investigate how these goods entered the country undetected”

He further stressed the need for accountability

“If evidence of corruption or negligence by officials emerges, those responsible must face the full force of the law”

The case has highlighted growing concerns over the smuggling of illicit goods into the regions of the country , which poses both economic and law enforcement challenges.

The DPCI is currently investigating the possibility of collusion or border control failures that allowed the illegal cargo to bypass standard security checks. Sibanda remains in custody pending his next court appearance

The outage began at the morning hour of 6am and was restored at 7:50pm

According to suspicions, it was a cable theft that led to the outage the lasted for more than 10 hours near the newly built Shoprite USave store in the Ext 10

Residents say, at the early morning of Tuesday, a group of individuals were stealing a copper cable in the Ext 10, which is a main powerline for areas of Ext 5, 10, 13 and 15

In October last year, some of the widely known gang members robbed construction workers of their cash amounting to R950.00 at the Shoprite USave's construction site

It was alleged that three males, armed with pangas, went to a supermarket's construction site on the 06th October 2024, in the Ext 10. The DR KK Health led another Planning Lekgotla for the 2025/26 Financial Year

Wolmaransstad - The Maquassi-Hills Sub District team has concluded it's  2-day Planning Lekgotla for the 2025/26 Financial Year

Priorities remain encompassed over the provision of quality, efficient health care, that's according to the sub-district team

In 2025, the Dr KK District Health led a Lekgotla in the Maquassi-Hills sub-district for its 2024/25 Financial Year. Different units in the sub district led by Simanga Shabangu, met to plan, review and put into perspective different interventions to improve the health services delivery in the sub district. The Lekgotla which was held recently sought to highlight Nic Bodenstein Hospital's financial flow for the upcoming year & what should be implemented to allow the hospital's service delivery progress amid challenges faced by sfaff & management

The hospital has been been experiencing a challenge of beds due to shortage with some going for repairs. The hospital also experienced a challenge with staff shortage

The shortage of staff impacted service delivery at the hospital due to budget shortage as numbers of patients continue to rise with some released to the care of their loved ones, making a way for those in critical illnesses & conditions to access beds. The hospital is also short of blankets, allowing staff members to make provisions & request families of those admitted for intensive care to send in warm blankets for their loved ones

The former Health MEC reitarated in an interview with Wolmaransstad Link that, the hospital will be upgraded in terms of a number of beds & new staff members Nic Bodenstein Hospital, not only service Wolmaransstad residents for serious health conditions, it also services Makwassie, Boskuil, Leeudoringstad, Witpoort - nearby farms. Despite budget allocation - The hospital's finances can't cover all costs as there are too many challenges demanding to be fixed

The former Health MEC in the North West, Madoda Sambatha also confirmed to Wolmaransstad Link that they will shift healthcare access for Ottosdal residents to Nic Bodenstein Hospital in Wolmaransstad as their district hospital, said Mbatha, the Nic Bodenstein Hospital still has to be upgraded in terms of the number of beds and staff members to accommodate Ottosdal residents

"We will shift hospital access for Ottosdal residents first, they will access it in Nic Bodenstein as their district hospital, therefore it means Nic Bodenstein Hospital would have to be upgraded in terms of first the number of beds and secondly staff establishments. We have a problem, the community needs us to build afresh Nic Bodenstein" - Sambatha

The old buildings of that hospital will be closed permanently and be relocated to the new identified land. Due to its age, it will be costly to have it under-go maintanance

Sambatha made words that, Nic Bodenstein Hospital will be turned into a district hospital for Maquassi Hills residents including that of Ottosdal Sambatha said, it will strain department of health's budget to maintain & renovate hospital's structure due to its aging such as equipments, beds including bathrooms that are not of good conditions

"Instead of the health community centre because they have one. We are going to upgrade the designs of a community health centre to become a district hospital, build it where the land was identified for the community health centre and later when finished we will close down Nic Bodenstein to relocate it to a new area because it is very expensive to maintain it on the basis of its age" - Sambatha

The Dr Kennth Kaunda District Health panel of officials have concluded the Lekgotla which was held at the Nic Bodenstein Hospital boardroom

Rape cases have been opened after underage girls fell pregnant

Three cases of statutory rape have been opened at the Christiana Police Station after three teenage girls, aged 14, 15, and 16, visited the local clinic unaccompanied by parents and were confirmed to be pregnant.

According to police, the matter was brought to their attention by a nursing sister and a medical practitioner, who became concerned about the girls’ ages, absence from school, and lack of adult supervision.

The concern also raised questions about possible neglect or breach of duty of care by their guardians.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit was alerted and has since launched an investigation into the possible contravention of the Sexual Offences and Related Matters Amendment Act of 2007.

This law prohibits consensual sexual acts with children under a certain age, even if the child gives consent.

Preliminary investigation revealed that all three girls were in intimate relationships that led to unprotected sex. The 14-year-old was allegedly impregnated by a 17-year-old boy, the 16-year-old by an 18-year-old, while the age of the 15-year-old girl’s boyfriend is still being verified.

Police say all dockets will be referred to the Senior Public Prosecutor for a decision.

NW legislature has slammed gender imbalances within it's ranks

The North West Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Premier and Finance has issued a scathing rebuke of the provincial government’s poor track record on gender equity in top leadership roles.

Chaired by Nathan Oliphant, the Committee expressed "deep disappointment" after it emerged that out of 12 departmental Heads of Department (HoDs), only one woman— Kgomotso Mahlobo of Human Settlements—has been appointed.

This revelation came during an oversight meeting held with the Office of the Premier, focusing on employment equity within senior management ranks, especially Deputy Directors-General (DDGs) and HoDs.

“It is unacceptable that a government led by a majority female Executive Council—six women out of ten—has failed to reflect that same commitment in its top administrative appointments,” said Hon. Oliphant.

Of the 11 DDG positions not tied to HoD roles, eight have been filled—six by African men, one by an African woman, and one by an Indian man. Three posts remain vacant.

“This clearly fails to represent the demographics of our province and shows a disturbing lack of urgency in transforming public sector leadership,” Oliphant added.

Acting Premier and MEC for Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism, Kenetswe Mosenogi, acknowledged the report’s findings and confirmed that three HoD positions remain unfilled. However, the Committee reminded her that these same posts had previously been flagged due to non-compliance with recruitment requirements—particularly the prioritization of women and persons with disabilities.

“Appointing more men would contradict both the South African Constitution and the province’s own equity policies. This unlawful deviation from the advertised equity priorities would not only be a step backward but a betrayal of efforts to redress historic imbalances,” Oliphant warned.

The Committee has now called for a full employment equity implementation report from all departments and urged the Office of the Premier to reconsider pending appointments that have not yet been finalized.

“There’s a serious concern that transformation has stalled. Transparency is appreciated, but action is now required to correct this imbalance,” concluded Oliphant.

A follow-up meeting will be scheduled once the reports are submitted, and the Committee has made it clear that real progress—not just paperwork—is expected.

Mamusa youth celebrated their month in honour of 1976 generation

The spirit of the 1976 Soweto Uprising was revived as Mamusa Youth In Action hosted vibrant Youth Month  celebrations at the Multipurpose Centre in Ipelegeng. The event paid homage to the fearless youth of 1976 who sacrificed their lives to pave the way for future generations.

The centre was filled to capacity with young people from various parts of the Mamusa Local Municipality, coming together to empower, reflect, and unite

The programme featured a range of cultural performances that included Setswana traditional dance, poetry, modern dance, and singing, all focusing on youth development and self-expression.

A solemn prayer session was held, accompanied by candle lighting, as a call to bring peace and divine guidance to the youth of Mamusa, especially in light of recent incidents of gang violence that shook the Ipelegeng community.

Guest speakers from different professional backgrounds took to the podium to share words of encouragement, highlighting the importance of education, discipline, and perseverance in shaping a better future.

Among the notable attendees was Mamusa Local Municipality Mayor Seitebaleng Chelechele, who addressed the youth, saying:
“As we are gathered here, we have come to support our young men and women, to help them better understand the importance of this day. We want to instill knowledge in them so they understand how this day came to be, as they weren’t yet born when the uprising took place.”

Event organiser Dikeledi Kgasu said the purpose of the event was to awaken the inner strength and potential of the youth:
“We want the youth to realise their strength and use it for positive outcomes, to fight gender-based violence, gangsterism, and crime. When the youth are united, they can overcome all the social ills plaguing Mamusa and achieve great things.”

SASSA's new verification process proves difficult for beneficiaries

SASSA grant recipients battle with new verification process
SASSA grant recipients battle with new verification process

SASSA grant recipients battle with new verification process
Members of Parliament are raising concerns about SASSA’s new verification process.

The National Treasury is introducing new conditions that SASSA must follow to get access to funds.

The conditions include submitting quarterly progress reports before the end of July and October.

These reports must include the number of grants reviewed, suspended or cancelled; savings; and any implementation challenges.

The agency is also required to strengthen its income verification, biometric systems, and other database cross-verifications.

However, MPs have raised concerns about how these new conditions will impact poor households.

Several grant recipients have reported struggling to access their grants because of SASSA’s reviews.

According to October, many recipients have found the biometric verification so difficult to navigate that they cannot get their grants.

TymeBank slams Home Affairs for steep hike in cost of ID verification

TymeBank co-founder Coenraad Jonker has slammed the Department of Home Affairs for steeply hiking the fee banks and financial services providers have to pay for verifying customers' identity.

The new prices amount to an increased cost of up to 6 500%.

In a statement, the Department noted it previously charged users 15 cents per real-time verification against the National Population Register (NPR), which has not changed since the launch of the service in 2013.

After initiating substantial upgrades to the service, it has gazetted a new price structure that sets a 'cost-reflective' price for real-time verifications during peak hours at R10, and an off-peak, low-cost alternative for batch transactions costing R1.

"The Minister of Home Affairs calls upon users to rise above narrow profiteering and put South Africa’s national security interests first."
Department of Home Affairs

However, Jonker says what the new fee structure actually does, is threaten the unit economics of their service to the poorest South Africans.

This means is that the price increase makes it unprofitable to serve a social grant recipient, he goes on.

"We absolutely agree with the Minister that the system has to be fixed and we've offered to help in whatever way we can to do this... but it cannot be done at the cost of the poorest South Africans and at the cost of financial inclusion and transformation in the country."
Coenraad Jonker, CEO - Tyme Group

TymeBank has worked for many years to make sure they run a business that is cost-efficient enough to profitably serve that customer, and the Minister's decision has far-reaching effects, Jonker says.

He spells out the consequences for TymeBank, or probably banks in general.

"There are two things that can happen - either we cross-subsidise this customer by using the money we make from other customers, but we know in the long run that doesn't work. Ultimately, shareholders are going to say you have to stop serving that customer... or we'll have to raise the prices and then the customer will no longer be able to afford the service."
Coenraad Jonker, CEO - Tyme Group

Jonker says the decision also takes South Africa 'way out of kilter' with what other emerging markets charge for the same service.

EMS urges citizens to be cautious when keeping warm during colds

Emergency Management Services (EMS) has again urged residents to exercise caution when keeping warm by fires, heaters, and braziers.

This as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a warning about freezing temperatures that are gripping parts of the country.

EMS Spokesperson Eric Maloka urged residents not to leave heating devices unattended in an attempt to prevent fires.

“We therefore would like to encourage our residents to plan when using all heating devices safely. Electrical heaters, braziers, paraffin stoves and candles – not to leave them unattended while in use to prevent fire incidents at home during these extremely cold temperatures. All three regional fire stations around the city are on high alert to ensure that we effectively respond to all emergencies which might occur during this cold front.”

Informal traders push back against proposed loose cigarette ban

Small traders warn that banning single cigarette sales under new tobacco laws could threaten their livelihoods.

Informal traders say their livelihoods are being threatened by proposed new tobacco laws.

Under the Tobacco Products and Electronic Delivery Systems Control Bill, the sale of single cigarettes would be banned.

The Portfolio Committee on Health recently heard from a small traders organisation in Parliament, who said the move would cripple them.

They argue that many customers who buy single cigarettes also purchase other items too.

But Ucko says the argument is not an accurate one.

"It is preposterous to suggest that a shop, or any business will go insolvent because they are banned from selling single cigarettes, because they can still sell boxes."
- Peter Ucko, Executive Director of the Tobacco Alcohol and Gambling Advisory Advocacy and Action Group (TAG)

Ucko argues that selling loose cigarettes is ultimately bad for the fiscus.

It keeps more people addicted, he says, which in turn means those people eventually become a burden on the health system as a result of smoking-related health issues.

"If the smoker who wants a cigarette and only has enough money for a single cigarette can't get that single cigarette, time goes by and the craving goes away."
- Peter Ucko, Executive Director of the Tobacco Alcohol and Gambling Advisory Advocacy and Action Group (TAG)

"So [the ban] is, in fact, good for addiction and for breaking the habits."
- Peter Ucko, Executive Director of the Tobacco Alcohol and Gambling Advisory Advocacy and Action Group (TAG)
