The North West Provincial Government has dismissed as false and misleading reports claiming that R383 million from its 2024/25 budget allocation will be returned to the National Treasury.
Responding to the claims, provincial spokesperson Sello Tatai confirmed unequivocally that “it is a lie” that any portion of the budget will be forfeited to the national fiscus.
According to preliminary audit outcomes, the provincial government spent 99.29% of its R54.2 billion budget, amounting to R53.9 billion – a notable improvement compared to previous financial years. Only two departments failed to meet the minimum 95% expenditure threshold.
The reported R383 million under-expenditure includes R176 million from the equitable share, which will remain with the province. The balance of R207 million is being processed as a rollover into the 2025/26 financial year.
“National Treasury has already approved R172 million, which will be re-appropriated through the November 2025 adjustment budget,” the statement read. The funds will be used to drive infrastructure development and improve service delivery across the province.
“There is no R383 million which is going to be returned to National Treasury as alleged by some in the mainstream and social media platforms. It is a lie,” reiterated Tatai.
