Sabotaged sewage site restored in Rustenburg

What began as a devastating act of vandalism has taken a turn for the better, as the Rustenburg Local Municipality (RLM) confirmed the full restoration of the sewage pump station near Savanna Falls.

The pump station, built to service Savanna Falls and surrounding estates, was stripped bare in April 2025 by criminals who made off with key infrastructure — including the electrical panel, transformer, cutter motor, cables, and floodlights. This left residents facing a sewage system in complete shutdown, resulting in foul odours, environmental concerns, and growing frustration.

The municipality issued an official response, confirming that:

All stolen equipment has been replaced.
The plant is now fully operational, with no sewage overflow.

The electrical panel has been relocated inside the pump house for better protection.
Security has been significantly improved, including 24-hour guards, concrete palisade fencing, gates, locks, and outdoor lighting.

RLM noted that the pump station was initially completed in November 2024 and became operational shortly thereafter. The April sabotage, however, set the system — and community — back significantly.

In their statement, RLM acknowledged community concerns and outlined steps to ensure the facility remains protected from future criminal activity. With sewage spills halted and safety measures tightened, residents can breathe a little easier.

The vandalised sewage pump station on Arnoldistad Road had wires ripped out and essential equipment stolen, this multi-million rand site was gutted.
