'Cat' Matlala trial: Focus shifted to police handling of accused Musa Kekana

The trial of alleged crime boss Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala and four co-accused has ended the week with questions lingering over how police handled accused one, Musa Kekana.

Kekana said police removed him from Edenvale hospital before he had finished his medical treatment and took him to a holding cell at Bramley police station.

He also claims a former Bramley station commander put pressure on hospital staff to release him early.

All of this is being tested in a trial-within-a-trial, where Kekana is trying to have evidence allegedly obtained during his arrest thrown out of the main trial.

The five are facing a combined 25 charges in connection with three incidents between 2022 and 2024.

Sergeant Malikutu Raseala, who transported Kekana from the hospital to the police station, denied that a former commander had anything to do with his discharge

The court also heard medical evidence about Kekana’s condition.

Two doctors who examined him at Edenvale after his arrest said they saw no visible injuries.

A paramedic also told the court that Kekana told her he had been assaulted by police, but that allegation was not recorded in her notes.

The medical evidence has become a key part of Kekana’s challenge to the arrest, with the defence claiming he was assaulted and suffocated during arrest.

The court also heard that Kekana had previously been hospitalised after an overdose involving cocaine and alcohol, and had been intubated, resulting in him coughing up blood

And then there was an unexpected courtroom interruption.

Disbarred advocate Malesela Teffo arrived in court and attempted to bring an application, saying he was acting in the interest of justice and that the accused’s constitutional rights were being violated.

But Judge Cassim Moosa stopped him in his tracks.

"The court can only entertain anything on your side if you adduce documentary evidence that you are properly before this court as a legal practitioner," said Moosa
