NW women defy odds at Ariel Arts Rustenburg

Ever dreamt of flying - At Aerial Arts Rustenburg, that dream is within reach — literally. Combining fitness, grace, and gravity-defying fun, this unique studio is helping women and children take their health to new heights through aerial silk, hoop (lyra), and yoga.

Founded and led by the dynamic Jennifer Mendes, a qualified personal trainer with over 20 years of experience, Aerial Arts Rustenburg offers a safe, empowering space where students can build strength, balance, and self-confidence.

“Teaching aerial is about more than just the technique,” says Mendes. “It’s about empowering individuals to fly. My role is not just to teach skills — it’s to inspire confidence and ignite passion.”

Classes are held every afternoon on the grounds of Selly Park High School, and the first session is completely free. “We cater to ladies and children, with classes starting from age five,” Jennifer adds. “It’s women-only — for comfort and community — and we have such a supportive environment that anyone will feel welcome.”

Aerial silk is a form of aerial fitness where participants perform poses and routines while suspended in long, flowing fabric. “It’s a fantastic workout that strengthens the upper body, improves balance, and enhances the connection between mind and body,” Jennifer explains. “Plus, it’s an incredible amount of fun.”

For Stacey Jackson, one of Jennifer’s students, the experience has been life-changing. “I first joined one of Jennifer’s fitness classes just to try it out,” says Stacey. “I hated working out before, but this ignited a passion in me to become a better version of myself. Now I do all her classes!”

Besides aerial silk, the studio also offers aerial hoop, pole fitness for women, and yoga classes focusing on flexibility, mindfulness, and strength. Whether you’re a fitness fanatic or just someone looking to try something new and exhilarating, Aerial Arts Rustenburg offers a unique, uplifting way to get active.

“If you want to work out, find something fun that you love,” Jennifer advises. “Running on a treadmill isn’t for everyone. Aerial arts is exciting and empowering — and the community here makes it even more special.”

Bafana Bafana won victory at U-20 AFCON

South Africa’s victory in the TotalEnergies Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) shines a light on the impact of grassroots initiatives.

For the past decade, the DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) has been a platform for youngsters to showcase their talent, providing a competitive space for young players to hone their skills and gain crucial exposure.

This nurturing of talent from the ground up is evident after both the SA U17s & U20s qualified for their respective World Cups. And Amajita is dominated by players who are playing in the DDC made history on Sunday night as they won the Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations for the very first time.

Amajita clinch AFCON U20 to make history

Amajita makes history, reaches AFCON U20 final for the first time in 28 years

Amajita fly SA flag high, qualify for U20 FIFA World Cup

This includes Gomolemo Kekana, who netted the winning goal, and Tylon Smit,h who walked away with the player of the tournament award.

“We are incredibly proud of Amajita. This remarkable achievement underscores the impact that grassroots development initiatives, such as our DStv Diski Challenge, play in unearthing and nurturing exceptional football talent. With 18 of the players competing regularly in the Reserve League, the DDC has served as a crucial platform, providing young players with the competitive environment and exposure necessary to reach their full potential,” said Rendani Ramovha, CEO of SuperSport.

South Africa’s Under-20 head coach Raymond Mdaka also credited the DSTV Diski Challenge for playing an important role in football development in South Africa.

“I salute the DDC because it made it easy for us to be able to see players weekend over weekend going to different places, seeing them and also following them the country is so big, if it wasn’t for the DDC we weren’t going to be able to see them. You couldn’t drive maybe to have follow ups but through the DDC we were able to do that. We salute and we say they have done a good job for the country,” said Mdaka.

Amajita have followed in the footsteps of Bafana Bafana’s in 1996 and Banyana Banyana’s in 2022 teams, in scooping the continental title.

Rayno made history as first African to win World's Strongest Man

South Africa’s Rayno Nel has made history by becoming the first African to win the World’s Strongest Man competition on Sunday.

It was also the first victory by a rookie at the event since 1997.

"I'm just over the moon. To represent South Africa in any way whatsoever, it feels surreal. I mean, we're a small country with a lot of struggles. To have something like this, I know, means a lot to my people,” said to USA TODAY Sports.

At World's Strongest Man, competitors earn points based on the order of finish in each event, with the top finisher getting the most points.

"Rugby was what I thought I would do for my sport career. I didn't think I'd do any sport ever again," he said. "But I always had this competitive side to me, so when I stopped playing rugby, I knew I needed to do something competitive. That's just who I am."

On Saturday, The former Cheetahs and Central University of Technology rugby player won the opener, the Carry & Hoist, for a full bag of 10 points, and finished second in the deadlift and Hercules holds, earning nine points in each.

Nel returned on Sunday for the final two competitions, managing only three points in the Flintstone press, but the eight points he secured in the final Atlas stones competition earned him the narrow victory. He started the final with eight points earned for placing third in the heats stage of the competition.

With a jaw-dropping 0.5-point victory, South Africa’s powerhouse shocked the world and claimed the crown in one of the biggest upsets in WSM history!

The South African won by half-a-point over defending champion and three-time winner Tom Stoltman of Britain.

Before being called up by the Cheetahs, the 30-year-old who captained CUT in three successive Varsity Cup campaigns, told USA TODAY he wouldn’t be able to celebrate by drinking his favourite beer, Black Label.

Absa staff face disciplinary action over information leaks

Absa has seen significant internal volatility over the past six years with internal turmoil and leadership changes.

The turbulence within Absa shows no signs of easing, with new reports indicating that the bank is initiating disciplinary action against certain employees following the outcome of a forensic investigation that uncovered serious misconduct.

According to a report on News24, the banking group has launched disciplinary action after ENS Forensics uncovered evidence that some staff members may have leaked important company information.

In an emailed response to Moneyweb, Absa noted that the “independent investigation” included the leaking of confidential company information in its scope.

“The investigation has concluded that there is prima facie evidence of serious misconduct, which will be presented in a formal disciplinary enquiry in accordance with proper protocols and procedures including being chaired by an independent senior counsel.”

The information was leaked without going through any of the bank’s formal whistleblower channels, the bank adds.

“At no point did the employees involved identify themselves as whistleblowers or indicate they were making protected disclosures as defined by the Protected Disclosures Act, or Absa’s policy, despite having the opportunity to do so.”

Absa further notes it is bound by its commitment to strict confidentiality to protect the integrity of its disciplinary process and safeguard the privacy rights of employees. “We will therefore not be providing additional commentary on the specifics of this case.”

Leadership shakeup

Earlier media reports suggest that the leaked information may have led to the abrupt early retirement of former CEO Arrie Rautenbach, who stepped down from the position in October 2024 and entered a six-month garden leave period.

According to TimesLIVE, Rautenbach’s departure may have revolved around Cowyk Fox, former CEO of Absa’s Everyday Banking division. Fox received a salary from Absa while he was a US citizen without making the appropriate US security contributions. This was allegedly in violation of US regulations.

The latest reports of internal volatility come barely two weeks after Absa Group chair Sello Moloko announced he would step down from his position on 15 July and less than a month before Kenny Fihla, former Standard Bank executive, takes over as the new CEO.

Absa has seen significant leadership changes in recent years. Since the departure of long-serving CEO Maria Ramos in 2019, the bank has had six interim and permanent CEOs in six years. Its pace of transformation and diversity at senior levels have also drawn scrutiny in some quarters.

Absa’s share price traded at R166 at around 4pm on Monday, 2.9% lower than Friday. However, the decline was not isolated – shares of other major South African banks also slipped.

The disclosure does not necessarily have to be in a formal “declaration.” The Act protects an employee who makes a “protected disclosure. The focus is on the nature of the disclosure and the manner in which it is made.

It is not a strict legal requirement to always go to the employer first before any other type of disclosure can be protected.

Suzuki secures partnership with Fortress to expand operations in SA

Suzuki Auto South Africa, in partnership with real estate group Fortress, has begun construction on a new state-of-the-art head office and distribution centre at Longlake Logistics Park in Gauteng, marking a significant step in the Japanese automaker’s expansion in the region.

The sod-turning ceremony, held on May 21, celebrated Suzuki’s 17 consecutive years of sales growth and underscored its commitment to the South African market. The 24 507m² facility, set for completion by mid-2026, will replace the company’s current headquarters at Linbro Business Park.

The new site will feature 19 100m² of warehousing with a 15m clear height for optimized storage, alongside 2 900m² of modern office space, training facilities, boardrooms, a workshop, and a 100-seater canteen. Designed to support efficient logistics, the facility includes large yards and easy vehicle access.

“This investment reflects Suzuki’s growing market share and long-term vision for South Africa,” said Berto van der Lith, the vice president and chief financial officer of Suzuki Auto South Africa. “The new headquarters will enhance our operations and support future growth. We’re thrilled to partner with Fortress on this milestone.”

Marguerite Oosthuizen, Leasing Consultant at Fortress, added, “This facility is more than a warehouse - it’s a tailored, future-focused space that embodies Suzuki’s brand and supports sustainable growth.”

The project aligns with Suzuki’s increasing presence in South Africa, where it has seen consistent sales growth, driven by demand for its affordable and reliable vehicles.
