Maquassi Hills gabagge truck seen delivering water to residents

A gabagge truck has been seen delivering water to struggling with this daily basic need. In a picture that was taken by a resident  in Tswelelang, he sounded disappointed following the incident

Multiple 20L bottles were seen being offloaded from the truck, this reveals the dire water situation Maquassi Hills Municipality is currently experiencing

The municipality has been struggling to provide residents with adequate water supply citing regular maintenance, major pipe leakages or bursts

However, the municipality has been engulfed in debts with service providers including the water utility, Magalies Water

Maquassi Hills Municipality has been in loggerheads with the water utility saying that millions of rands have been owed to the Magalies Water Board

In 2024, Magalies Water Board issued a report that, in June 2025, there is a possibility that it will go bankrupt due to municipalities owing the water board millions of rands

The Director-General for the Department of Water and Sanitation, Sean Phillips said, Magalies Water Board has already reached the point where their expenditure exceeds the available bank balance and will not be able to pay their operating costs and have stopped paying for their raw water

"Magalies Water Board has already reached the point where their expenditure exceeds the available bank balance and will not be able to pay their operating costs and have stopped paying for their raw water"

A community activist, Kagiso Sejamoholo, wrote the email on behalf of Tswelelang and Maquassi Hills community said, he's been a encountering community members who are facing water crisis running around seeking water on daily basis

"Today I encountered people of Extension 10, in Tswelelang location facing water crisis, they said it's been weeks without water. Often I meet residents of Ext 17 and Ext 15 with buckets running around wanting water"

Sejamoholo also sent a letter to Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation, Sello Seitlholo, regarding water challenges residents of Maquassi Hills are currently encountering and he has promised to look at the matter
