Rustenburg Local Municipality's Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Special Projects and Intergovernmental Relations, Councillor Virginia Mputle, joined hundreds of residents, government departments, law enforcement agencies, civil society organisations, faith-based groups and other stakeholders in a Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Awareness March on Friday.
The march aimed to raise awareness about the ongoing scourge of gender-based violence and unite communities in the fight against the abuse of women, children and other vulnerable groups.
Addressing participants, Mputle described gender-based violence as a national crisis that requires urgent action from all sectors of society.
She said violence against women and children cannot be normalised and called on communities to stand together in protecting the vulnerable.
She urged men to become agents of change by rejecting violence, promoting respect and equality, and holding perpetrators accountable.
Mputle also encouraged survivors of abuse to report incidents without fear and seek assistance, assuring them that support services are available.
"The fight against gender-based violence cannot be left to government alone. Every member of society has a role to play in building safer communities where women and children can live free from violence and fear," she said.
The municipality reaffirmed its commitment to supporting awareness campaigns, victim support programmes and community partnerships aimed at eradicating gender-based violence and promoting safer communities.
