The South African Local Government Association - SALGA in North West has reacted to the treatment of Maquassi Hills Municipal Council at the North West Provincial Legislature's SCOPA meeting in mid-June
The association has expressed it's concerns over how the council was thrown out the meeting for failing to account on the finances of the municipality and also failing to deliver a required financial report
The African National Congress (ANC) member, Sarah Nkatlo who says she is still the Speaker of the Council, confirmed that they went to the North West Provicial Legislature's SCOPA meeting unprepared
SALGA Provincial Chairperson, Khumalo Molefe said, they are against the council being discredited the way they were in the public
"What we're against is being discredited in the public, that is the part we do not agree with, but we say in essence, people should be held accountable, we will deal with this issue of public embarrassment incidents, we must correct it" - SALGA Provincial Chairperson, Khumalo Molefe
Molefe said, the committee is acting within it's mandate to achieve their oversight if the government institution did not meet it's responsibilities, he said, there is a way the committee should do things
"What is happening in Maquassi Hills is embarrassing, what we did as the association, we have a partnership with Cooperative Governance, Human Settlement and Traditional Affairs - CGHSTA, that is why there is an intervention from that department in Maquassi Hills, by law, the committee was supposed to have called the intervener into the meeting" - SALGA Provincial Chairperson, Khumalo Molefe
Molefe also said, they wrote to the North West Provincial Legislature's SCOPA committee requesting a meeting to discuss the matter further and that they will support the council when they heard back to account
"We wrote to them; requesting a meeting, it is indeed the right decision to refer the council back to prepare and we will support them when they return to the committee" - SALGA Provincial Chairperson, Khumalo Molefe
North West Provincial Legislature Committe Chairperson, Smuts Matshe said, they are expected to meet with the Maquassi Hills Council to provide with the financial report they requested and accountablity should be taken for it. The committee is expected to meet up with Maquassi Hills Council very soon
