North West allocates R1.7 Billion to speed up housing delivery

The North West Department of Human Settlements has been allocated R1.708 billion for the 2026/27 financial year to accelerate housing delivery and improve living conditions across the province.

The budget, announced by MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, Gaoage Oageng Molapisi, will be used to unblock stalled housing projects, eradicate mud houses, provide homes for military veterans, upgrade informal settlements, develop serviced residential sites, and settle obligations with key housing institutions.

The department also celebrated exceeding its housing delivery target during the previous financial year. Against a target of 3,555 houses, it successfully handed over 3,692 homes, with many benefiting elderly residents. For the current financial year, the department aims to deliver 3,793 housing units.

Despite ongoing budget pressures, MEC Molapisi reaffirmed the department's commitment to ensuring that vulnerable families have access to decent housing.

The MEC further highlighted progress on the Bokamoso Project in Bojanala District and the Matlosana N12 Project in Dr Kenneth Kaunda District. Together, the projects exceeded their target by delivering 590 housing units, surpassing the planned 400 homes.

Addressing concerns over project delays, Molapisi warned that contractors who fail to meet their obligations will face strict consequences, including the termination of their contracts.

To further improve access to housing, the department has set aside R246 million to develop 3,269 serviced residential sites across the province during the 2026/27 financial year.

The department will also strengthen collaboration with municipalities to ensure that essential infrastructure is installed before houses are built.

The Department says it remains committed to restoring dignity and improving the quality of life of vulnerable households by creating sustainable human settlements throughout the North West Province.
