"There's no justification for taking human life" - Morweng spoke following a NW murder


The North West MEC for the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, Wessels Morweng has visited the family of killed Obakeng Santo in Magogoe village outside Mahikeng ,on Thursday, 2nd July 2026 following an fatal incident on the afternoon of Wednesday, 1st July 2026, where their 26-year-old son who was allegedly stabbed by a foreign national at his tuck shop.

According to initial police reports, the suspect who reportedly is a foreign national, stabbed Obakeng  with a sharp object during an altercation.

MEC Morweng's visit to the distraught Santo family received warm welcome accompanied by Ngaka Modiri Molema District Commissioner, Major General Mmatlhapi Mmolawa and Chief Director for Civilian Secretariat for Police Service, Mrs Mpho Rantona.

“We wish to express our deepest condolences to the family and the local community. We are saddened by the loss of your son and our prayers and thoughts are with you during this difficult time.

“There is no justification for the taking of a human life. We condemn this senseless act of violence in the strongest possible term. This kind of violence has no place in our communities, it is in fact a threat to the foundation of our democracy and our efforts to enhance social cohesion”, said MEC Morweng.

The MEC also commended the efforts of the police for the swift arrest of the suspect.

“We also applaud police for their swift intervention following assistance by community members. It is this kind of timely action that restores public confidence on our law enforcement system,” said MEC Morweng.

The suspect appeared before court on Friday, 3rd of July 2026 on murder charges.
