The long-awaited conclusion to the trial in the high-profile murder case of Rustenburg businessman Ben Gumbi is finally in sight. The North West High Court sitting in Mogwase has postponed the case to 6–10 October 2025 for closing arguments.
This development follows a week-long court session from 23 to 27 June 2025, where chilling details surrounding the events of 23 August 2023 were once again revisited. On that tragic morning, Gumbi was gunned down outside a Rustenburg coffee shop moments after dropping his daughter off at school with his wife.
During her testimony, Gumbi’s wife recalled seeing the face of one of the gunmen and later identified him in an ID parade. The state has argued that the killing was premeditated, citing evidence such as CCTV footage, a stolen getaway vehicle with false plates, and the accused’s prior criminal record.
Sibongiseni Ngubane (33), one of the accused, claims he was merely an Uber driver unknowingly involved. However, the state maintains he was paid R15,000 to assist in the hit. At the time of his arrest, Ngubane was already out on bail for other serious offences.
The community has closely followed the case, which sparked outrage after CCTV footage of the killing circulated widely on social media. Two additional suspects were reportedly killed in Eswatini in late 2023.
